Moodle files and BigBlueButton classes · about 2 min per hour

Transcribe a Moodle lecture recording a file or a BigBlueButton class.

A 90-minute lecture recording from a Moodle course is transcribed in about 3 minutes once you have it as a file; the first 20 minutes are free and four such lectures, 360 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500. Lectures attached as files download directly, while BigBlueButton class recordings play on a playback page and need a downloadable file from the lecturer or the site's administrator. WhipScribe is not a Moodle plugin: it transcribes the file.

Two kinds of Moodle recording

Some Moodle lectures are files. Some are class recordings. Both can become text.

Lecture files in the course

A lecture uploaded to Moodle as a file resource downloads like any attachment, in whatever format the lecturer used, often MP4 or MP3. Upload it as it is; if the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first. Lecturers who upload audio-only MP3s keep files small; at 96 kbps an hour is 96,000 bits a second times 3,600 seconds, about 43 MB.

BigBlueButton class recordings

Live classes held in BigBlueButton inside Moodle are kept as recordings that play back on a web page, and that page is not a file you can upload. Whether a downloadable video exists depends on how the site is set up, so ask the lecturer or the administrator for one.

Only what you may download

Students transcribe the Moodle recordings the lecturer has made downloadable. Lecturers can export their own recordings and post the transcript as a course file, which every student can then search.

A term in numbers

Twenty-four online classes of 90 minutes are 2,160 minutes, past the $12 pack's 2,000, so they go on the $24 pack of 5,000. Four 90-minute lectures use 360 minutes of the $6 pack. Upload each one on upload page.

What Moodle recordings leave out

A playback page shows the class again. It does not give you anything to read.

✗ Playback only

Moodle stores the class, and revising from it means rewatching it.

  • A playback page that cannot be uploaded
  • Notes from the class that end halfway
  • A 25 MB per-file limit on the Whisper API
  • Long class files split into chunks
  • Timestamps that start over in each chunk
  • Instructions given aloud and not posted

✓ A transcript in the course

The class as a document, timed to the recording.

  • Each class uploaded whole
  • A brief for each session
  • Chapters at each topic
  • Instructions and dates listed
  • A chat to find a point in the class
  • DOCX to post as a course file

FAQ

Moodle lecture recordings, answered.

How long does a 90-minute Moodle lecture take?

Around 3 minutes; an hour of audio takes about 2. A 3-hour recording is ready in about 6. Each finished transcript is kept in your Library alongside the others from the course.

What does a term of Moodle classes cost?

Twenty-four 90-minute classes are 2,160 minutes and go on the $24 pack of 5,000. Four lectures, 360 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500. First-time visitors get the first 20 minutes free, and a pack carries on from where the preview stopped.

Can I paste a Moodle or BigBlueButton playback link?

No. Those links are not among the links WhipScribe opens, and a playback page is not a file. Get a downloadable file from the lecturer or administrator, or paste a YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive link if the class was shared there. Some Moodle sites also offer a video export of class recordings; that file uploads like any other.

Is there a size limit for Moodle files?

One file may be up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Without a pack, uploads stop at 2 GB, and a heavier recording starts once a pack is on the account. A BigBlueButton class exported as video is usually well under that ceiling.

Can a lecture in Tagalog, Spanish or Japanese be transcribed?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically. A class that switches between English and Tagalog is handled in one recording, and mixed classes are detected on their main language.

Exports and privacy?

Moodle recordings come back as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Teachers and students who speak are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
