Transcribe a Kaltura lecture recording once you have the file.
To transcribe a Kaltura lecture, download the entry from MediaSpace or your course page where the owner has switched downloads on, then drop the file here; a three-hour lecture is ready in about 6 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and 180 minutes of lecture uses part of the $6 pack of 500 minutes. WhipScribe has no Kaltura plugin and nothing runs inside your university's video portal: it works on the file you are allowed to keep.
From MediaSpace to text
Kaltura keeps the lecture on the university's servers. The transcript can live with you.
Getting the file out of Kaltura
Many universities run Kaltura behind a MediaSpace site or inside the course page of their learning platform. When the entry's owner or the site administrator enables downloads, a download option appears on the entry, and the file is usually an MP4. If you see no such option, the lecturer has kept the recording stream-only, and the polite route is to ask them for the file.
Respect what the lecturer allows
Students transcribe the Kaltura lectures their lecturer has made downloadable. Screen-recording a stream-only entry, or passing a downloaded file around a cohort, is a question for the course rules and not something WhipScribe settles. Lecturers can always download their own entries and send transcripts to the class themselves.
What a long Kaltura lecture costs
A twelve-week course with two 75-minute lectures a week is 24 recordings and 1,800 minutes, which fits inside the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes with 200 left over. One three-hour seminar uses 180 of the 500 minutes in a $6 pack. Credits never expire, so the rest of the term can wait.
Upload once, read the whole thing
Drop the MP4 on upload page and the lecture runs as one file, with timestamps counting from the first minute to the last. Projector hum, chairs and the gap while slides change are not transcribed; the lecturer's speech and the questions near a microphone are.
Where Kaltura lectures stall
The video plays fine in the portal. Getting text out of three hours of it is the slow part.
✗ Working from the stream
Scrubbing a long entry in a browser player is how revision evenings disappear.
- Rewinding the player to catch one definition
- Captions that stay inside the portal
- A 25 MB limit on the Whisper API, far below a lecture video
- Cutting the MP4 into parts for short-clip tools
- Timestamps that reset in each part
- No list of the dates and readings announced
✓ Working from the transcript
The same lecture as text you can search, quote and revise from.
- One upload for the full entry
- A chapter wherever the topic turns
- Names, numbers and dates said, listed
- The questions the lecture answers
- A chat that finds the week's key formula
- SRT or VTT if the lecturer wants captions

FAQ
Kaltura lectures, answered.
How long does a three-hour Kaltura lecture take?
About 6 minutes, because an hour of audio takes about 2. A 75-minute lecture is back in under 3 minutes, and every transcript stays in your Library for later.
What does a term of Kaltura lectures cost?
Twenty-four lectures of 75 minutes come to 1,800 minutes, which sits on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes. A single three-hour lecture uses 180 minutes of the $6 pack of 500. A first visit starts with the first 20 minutes free, and a pack transcribes the rest from where the preview stopped. Prices are in US dollars.
There is no download button on the entry. What now?
Downloads on a Kaltura entry are set by its owner or the site administrator. If the option is missing, ask the lecturer for the file or for permission; WhipScribe cannot reach inside MediaSpace and has no integration with it.
The downloaded Kaltura file is over 2 GB. Will it upload?
A single Kaltura download can run to 10 hours or 5 GB. Before the first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB, so a heavier lecture video starts once a pack is on the account. Should the upload refuse the file, converting it to MP3 first fixes that and shrinks it a great deal.
Can it handle a lecture given in Korean, Swedish or Portuguese?
Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, so you do not choose one. A lecture that switches between two languages is detected on its main language, and the switches are handled.
Which exports are there, and is my lecture private?
The lecture leaves as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON, whichever suits your notes or captions. The lecturer and anyone asking questions are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
