2 to 3 hour Panopto sessions · download where enabled · minutes, not hours

Transcribe a Panopto lecture recording the full session, in one go.

A 2.5-hour Panopto lecture downloaded from the viewer is transcribed in about 5 minutes, and a 3-hour one in about 6. Download it where the creator has enabled downloads, upload the file here, and the first 20 minutes are free; the 150 minutes of a 2.5-hour session sit comfortably inside the $6 pack of 500 minutes. There is no Panopto add-in: WhipScribe reads the recording after it has been made.

Panopto, then WhipScribe

Lecture capture records every word. Reading them back is a separate job.

Downloading from the viewer

When a Panopto folder's creator allows it, the viewer shows a download option, and what you get is usually an MP4 of the session. Folder settings decide whether students see that option at all. If it is not there, the lecturer has chosen streaming only, and the file is theirs to share or not.

Long sessions are normal here

Panopto sits in lecture theatres that record whole teaching blocks, so two- and three-hour files are routine. Each one goes up as a single file, and the transcript keeps one clock from the opening remarks to the last slide, so a timestamp in the notes matches the time in the Panopto player.

Three sessions to one $6 pack

Three 2.5-hour sessions are 450 minutes, inside the 500 minutes of the $6 pack. An eleven-week module with one 3-hour block a week is 1,980 minutes, which just fits the $12 pack of 2,000. Credits never expire between terms.

From transcript to revision

Upload on upload page and the session comes back with a brief, chapters at each topic change, and the terms, names and dates the lecturer said. Ask the chat which week covered a theorem and it points you to the timestamp.

Why the Panopto player is not enough

Searchable captions in the viewer help a little. A three-hour block still needs a document.

✗ Revising from the player

Speed controls and a seek bar are all you get for hours of teaching.

  • Watching at 1.5x and still missing the definition
  • Notes that stop when your attention did
  • A three-hour MP4 too big for the 25 MB Whisper API limit
  • Parts and stitched timestamps from short-clip tools
  • No document to annotate before the exam
  • Nothing you can paste into your notes app

✓ Revising from the text

The session read in minutes, with the clock still matching the video.

  • A single upload, start to finish
  • The session's thesis and its takeaways
  • Chapters that mirror the slides
  • Every formula and date mentioned, listed
  • Questions the session answers
  • DOCX ready to annotate

00:38:20 The key distinction is between the short-run and the long-run curve. Keep the two diagrams apart.

FAQ

Panopto lectures, answered.

How long will a 2.5-hour Panopto session take?

Around 5 minutes. Transcription runs at about 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 50-minute class takes under 2 minutes and a 3-hour block about 6.

How many Panopto sessions does a $6 pack cover?

The $6 pack holds 500 minutes, which is three sessions of 2.5 hours with 50 minutes left. An eleven-week module of 3-hour blocks needs 1,980 minutes and fits the $12 pack of 2,000. If you are new, the first 20 minutes are free, and a pack transcribes the remainder from where the preview ended.

Can I paste a Panopto link instead of downloading?

No. Panopto viewer links are not one of the link types WhipScribe opens, so download the file first. If the lecturer also posts the session to YouTube or Vimeo, that link can be pasted directly.

Is there a size limit on the download?

A single file can be 10 hours or 5 GB, whichever comes first. Accounts without a pack can upload up to 2 GB, and a larger lecture video starts once a pack is bought. Longer than 10 hours means two files.

Does it work for lectures in Japanese or Spanish?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, including Japanese, Spanish, Korean and Hebrew. A session that moves between English and another language is detected on its main language, with the switches handled.

What exports come back, and who can see the recording?

Panopto sessions export to TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON from the same transcript. Speakers are identified and named in the session's summary, key quotes and chapters, never line by line. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
