Transcribe a long OBS Studio recording streams and lectures alike.
An OBS Studio recording, whether an MKV or an MP4, uploads here as it was saved, and an 8-hour stream is transcribed in about 16 minutes. One file can run to 10 hours or 5 GB, the first 20 minutes are free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes covers all eight hours with 20 minutes to spare.
What OBS gives you
OBS is built to capture long sessions. The transcript should not be the part that gives up.
Which file OBS wrote
The container is whatever is set under Settings, Output, Recording Format, most often MKV or MP4. To find the file, use File, Show Recordings, which opens the folder OBS writes to. Upload it as it is; the transcript is made from the audio inside, so the container makes no difference to the result.
Video makes the file big
At a typical 1080p bitrate an hour of OBS capture can take two to three gigabytes, so a long stream reaches 5 GB well before 10 hours. The speech is a tiny part of that. The box on this page takes ordinary sizes, and a capture in the gigabytes continues on the upload page.
Already streamed it? Paste the VOD
If the session went out on Twitch, Kick or YouTube, paste the VOD link instead of uploading the local file. Nothing has to leave your computer, and the transcript follows the public replay. Stream recordings over 6 hours start once a pack is on the account.
A lecture capture you can study from
Teachers who record slides and voice in OBS get chapters with timestamps that follow the lesson, a brief with the main points, and the definitions, numbers and dates said aloud. SRT and VTT put captions back on the video before it goes to students.
Why long OBS captures stall
Recording eight hours is easy. Doing anything with them afterwards is not.
✗ A huge file and no plan
The capture sits on the disk because no tool wants a file that size.
- Upload limits measured in megabytes
- Tools that stop at an hour or two
- Remuxing and splitting before you start
- Auto-captions only on the public copy
- Highlights picked by scrubbing
- No text to write the VOD description from
✓ The capture as it is
The MKV or MP4 goes up once and the whole session comes back.
- About 16 minutes for eight hours
- Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file
- The opening 20 minutes free
- Chapters for every segment
- Streamer and guests named in the brief
- Caption files to put back on the VOD
Sample
An eight-hour OBS stream, late in the session.
This sample is illustrative and was written for this page, not taken from a real stream. The timestamps show how deep into an eight-hour capture each line sits.

FAQ
OBS Studio recordings, the common questions.
How long does an 8-hour OBS recording take to transcribe?
About 16 minutes once uploaded, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A 3-hour lecture capture takes about 6. On a slow connection, uploading a multi-gigabyte capture can take longer than the transcription itself.
What does it cost to transcribe long OBS captures?
An 8-hour stream is 480 minutes, inside the $6 pack (500 minutes). A course of 40 lectures at 90 minutes each is 3,600 minutes, more than the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) holds, so it goes on the $24 pack (5,000 minutes). Credits never expire.
My capture is over 5 GB. What should I do?
Save only the audio track and upload that. With ffmpeg, running ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 4 output.mp3 writes an MP3 that is a small fraction of the size. Captures over 2 GB start once a pack is on the account.
The stream ran longer than 10 hours. Can it go in as one?
No; the limit is 10 hours per file. Split it at a natural break, or save the audio in two parts, and upload each one. Each transcript keeps its own timestamps starting from zero.
Does it work for streams in other languages?
Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, so a stream in Japanese, Portuguese or Korean needs no setup. A bilingual stream is detected on its main language, and English with Tagalog in one recording is handled. Game audio and music are not transcribed; the speech is.
What exports do I get, and is the capture private?
One run gives you TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Your OBS capture is transcribed on our own servers and is never used for training, and you can delete it with its transcript at any time.
