From the DS-9500 to a draft

The recorder writes DS2 for a dictation workflow. Turning it into text takes one copy and, sometimes, one conversion.

Getting the DS2 off the recorder

The DS-9500 records dictations as DS2 files, the Olympus dictation format. Connect it by USB or through its docking station and the dictations can be copied from the recorder or from the Olympus dictation software that receives them; some setups send dictations over the network instead. Copy the file rather than moving it, so your workflow keeps its record.

Convert if the upload refuses DS2

DS2 is built for dictation tools, and a general upload may not read it. If the box refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first, using the conversion in your Olympus software where your edition offers one. An encrypted DS2 must be opened with its password before conversion; we cannot read an encrypted file. Long files continue on the upload page, up to 5 GB.

A month of dictation, priced

A six-hour dictation day is 360 minutes, inside the $6 pack of 500. An author who dictates two hours every working day produces about 2,640 minutes in a month of 22 days, past the $12 pack's 2,000, so the $24 pack of 5,000 fits and carries the remainder into the next month.

What the dictation becomes

A typed draft with chapters at each letter or memo, timestamps to check a word against the audio, and a list of the names, case numbers, dates and amounts dictated. It is an AI transcript to work from, not a certified transcript and not legal advice, so a typist still reads it before it goes out.

Where DS-9500 dictations stall

The author dictates faster than anyone can type. The queue grows every afternoon.

✗ Dictations waiting in the queue

DS2 files stack up until someone has hours free to type them.

  • Six hours of dictation typed by hand
  • A DS2 file most audio tools will not open
  • Files past a 25 MB API limit
  • Letters delayed a day behind the dictation
  • Spellings checked by replaying the audio
  • A second dictation system bought just to type

✓ A draft ready for review

Convert if needed, upload, and the typist starts from text instead of audio.

  • Six hours of dictation in about 12 minutes
  • 20 free minutes on your first dictation
  • 360 of 500 pack minutes for a full day
  • A chapter per letter or memo
  • Names, dates and amounts listed
  • DOCX ready for the letterhead

FAQ

Olympus DS-9500 dictations, answered.

How long does a day of DS-9500 dictation take?

About 12 minutes for six hours of audio once the upload ends, at about 2 minutes per audio hour. A ten-minute letter is ready in seconds.

How much dictation does a pack cover?

The $6 pack of 500 minutes covers a six-hour dictation day with 140 minutes left. The $12 pack holds 2,000 minutes, and the $24 pack 5,000 for an author who dictates every day. A first visit makes the first 20 minutes of DS-9500 audio free, and credits never expire.

Does the upload read DS2 directly?

It may not. DS2 is a dictation format, so if the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first, ideally with the conversion in your Olympus software. Encrypted files need their password before they can be converted.

What are the per-file limits?

Up to Each DS-9500 file up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Before you buy a first pack, uploads are capped at 2 GB, and larger files begin once a pack is on the account. A dictation longer than 10 hours goes in as two files.

Can a DS-9500 author dictate in another language?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, so a dictation in German or Spanish needs no setting, and an English dictation full of Latin terms is handled as English.

Which exports, and where does the dictation go?

A DS-9500 dictation exports as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, which matters when a dictation carries client details.
