Android lecture recorder · WAV or 3GP · about 2 min per audio hour

Transcribe Smart Recorder lectures the whole class, not just the slides.

To transcribe a long lecture recorded with Smart Recorder on Android, share or copy the WAV or 3GP file off the phone and upload it here, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file; a 90-minute class returns as text in about 3 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free for a new visitor, and two 90-minute lectures a week make 180 minutes, well inside the $6 pack of 500 minutes.

From the phone to a page of notes

Smart Recorder keeps the lecture on the phone; one share is all it takes to get it here.

Getting the file off the phone

Smart Recorder lists every session in its recordings screen, and a long press or the item menu usually offers a share option. Share the lecture to Google Drive and paste the share link, or open upload page in the phone's browser and pick the file directly. If you are hunting for it in a file manager, check the storage folder named in the app's settings.

WAV or 3GP, and what each weighs

Which of the two you get depends on the encoding chosen in the app's settings, so check there before a long term begins. An uncompressed 16-bit mono WAV at 44.1 kHz is close to 318 MB an hour, so a 90-minute class is about 476 MB. A 3GP is far smaller, often only a few megabytes an hour, and either one uploads without converting.

Twelve weeks of classes, in minutes

Two 90-minute classes a week for twelve weeks is 2,160 minutes. That is more than the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes holds, so the term belongs on the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes at $0.29 an audio hour. A single week of 180 minutes sits on the $6 pack with 320 minutes left over.

What revision looks like after

Each class returns as a brief with the lecturer's main argument and the takeaways, chapters stamped with the time each topic began, and the dates, figures and names that came up. Ask the chat where the second worked example started and it points to the minute. Students who asked questions are named in the summary and key quotes.

Recorded lectures, the usual way

A 90-minute WAV on the phone is safe, and almost nobody plays it back before the exam.

✗ Before

The recording exists; the notes do not.

  • Scrubbing an hour in to find one definition
  • A 476 MB WAV that chat apps will not send
  • Uploads bounced by the Whisper API past 25 MB
  • Online tools that stop after a short clip
  • Handwritten notes with gaps during the fast parts
  • Lectures piling up unheard by mid-term

✓ After

Every class as searchable text.

  • The WAV or 3GP uploaded as saved
  • A class readable 3 minutes after upload
  • A chapter for every topic the lecturer covered
  • The formulas and dates said out loud, listed
  • A whole week of classes on the $6 pack
  • DOCX notes beside the slides

00:02:10 Right, last week we stopped at load paths, so today we pick up with how a beam actually carries that load to the supports.
00:27:45 Write this one down, because it shows up every single year: the maximum moment sits where the shear crosses zero.
00:58:03 A question from the back: does the same rule hold for a cantilever? It does, and here is why.
01:26:30 For Thursday, read the chapter on deflection and bring the problem set; we start with question four.

FAQ

Smart Recorder lectures, answered.

How long does a 90-minute Smart Recorder lecture take?

Roughly 3 minutes, since each audio hour takes about 2. A full 3-hour seminar is ready in around 6 minutes, and the public proof page shows 9.31 hours of audio done in 1,033 seconds.

Should I set the app to WAV or to 3GP for lectures?

For a lecture hall, the compressed setting is usually enough, because the voice is what matters and the file stays small. WAV keeps more detail, which helps when the lecturer walks away from the phone, at the cost of a far larger file. Both transcribe; check the app's encoding setting before the term so every class matches.

What will a semester of recordings cost?

The first 20 minutes are free to try on a first visit, and a longer lecture is previewed before you pay. After that, 180 minutes a week fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes, and a full twelve-week term of 2,160 minutes fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes. Credits never expire and there is no subscription.

My WAV of an all-day workshop is over 2 GB. Will it upload?

A file over 2 GB starts once a pack is on the account, and every file can go up to 10 hours or 5 GB. A mono WAV at 44.1 kHz passes 2 GB a little after six hours, so a full day may need the pack first, or a split into morning and afternoon.

Is the lecturer's permission needed?

Many universities and lecturers set their own rules on recording classes, so ask before the first session and keep the recordings for your own study. The lecture's language, or a mix of two, is detected automatically from 99.

Which files come back, and who sees my lectures?

Export each class as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Lectures are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and any recording can be deleted with its text from your Library.
