Transcribe all-day sessions from a Tascam Model 12 eight hours, one upload.
A Tascam Model 12 records long podcasts and rehearsal days to its SD card as WAV files, and an 8-hour stereo mix converted to MP3 comes back as text in about 16 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and the 480 minutes fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes with 20 left.
A full day off the card
The Model 12 will happily record all day. The only question is how to hand over a file that large.
Mixdown or master
On the card, a session usually holds one WAV per track, and a stereo file once you have mixed down. Copy that stereo file to a computer with a card reader; if there is no mix yet, make one in a DAW from the tracks. The folder layout follows the recorder's settings, so check before clearing the card.
Eight hours outgrow a WAV
Stereo 24-bit at 48 kHz runs about 1.04 GB an hour: eight hours is roughly 8.3 GB, and even a 16-bit export is around 5.5 GB. Convert the mix to a 128 kbps MP3, about 461 MB for the day, or export it in two halves of four hours each.
Where the time goes
Long podcasts with several guests, rehearsals where a director stops the band dozens of times, a recorded panel day: this is what a mixer-recorder runs through. Songs are not transcribed. The talk is, so the notes, the cues and the agreed changes come back in writing.
A day you can search
Eight hours return as one document with a brief, chapters with timestamps, and every name, number and date said. The chat over the transcript answers questions like which bar the second verse was moved to, and points to the moment it was decided.
All-day recordings elsewhere
A full day on a mixer-recorder is too big for most services and too long to replay.
✗ How a long day stalls
Eight good hours, nobody's notes.
- An 8.3 GB WAV refused outright
- Whisper's API stopping at 25 MB
- The day cut into a dozen files
- Each piece timed from zero
- Cues and decisions lost between songs
- A morning spent replaying the afternoon
✓ One MP3, one record
The whole day as text.
- A converted mix under 500 MB
- About 16 minutes for 8 hours
- Up to 10 hours in a file
- Chapters from start to finish
- Changes and cues in writing
- DOCX for the whole crew

FAQ
Tascam Model 12 recordings, the common questions.
How long does an 8-hour Model 12 recording take?
Roughly 16 minutes. For a longer benchmark, the proof page records 9.31 hours of audio completed in 1,033 seconds.
What will an 8-hour rehearsal day cost?
First-time visitors get 20 minutes free, enough to judge how the day reads. The full 480 minutes fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes, with 20 left. Four such days, 1,920 minutes, fit the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes.
My WAV is over 5 GB. What is the quickest fix?
Convert it to MP3 at 128 kbps in any audio editor; eight hours becomes about 461 MB with every word intact. Or split the mix at a break into two files and upload both.
The day ran more than 10 hours. Now what?
A file can be 10 hours long at most. Split the mix into two parts at a pause, upload each, and you get two transcripts with their own timestamps.
Do the songs get transcribed?
No. Music, sound effects and crowd noise are left out; speech is transcribed. Lyrics sung over a full band are not the target, but a line spoken between songs is.
Does WhipScribe connect to the Model 12, and is the audio private?
There is no connection to Tascam hardware; you copy the file and upload it. The day's audio is transcribed on our own servers and is never used for training. The day downloads as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON.
