Mixer-recorder · SD card WAV · upload the master

Transcribe hours of multitrack from a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 the master mix carries every voice.

A Zoom LiveTrak L-12 records a session to its SD card as WAV files, usually one per channel plus a stereo master, and uploading the master alone turns a 4-hour show into text in about 8 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and the 240 minutes fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes with 260 left.

Twelve channels, one transcript

The L-12 keeps every channel for the edit. The transcript only needs the mix you heard in the room.

Where the master sits

Each session is a folder on the SD card. Open it on a computer with a card reader and you will usually find a WAV per channel and a stereo master file; names vary with firmware and settings, so check before you delete anything. The master is the one to upload.

A dozen tracks cost a dozen times

Upload twelve channel files of a 4-hour show and you are billed 2,880 minutes, a $24 pack's worth, for one session. The master is 240 minutes on the $6 pack and reads as one conversation instead of twelve one-sided ones.

Over 2 GB, under 5 GB

A stereo master at 24-bit and 48 kHz grows by about 1.04 GB an hour, so four hours is roughly 4.15 GB. That is within the 5 GB ceiling but above the 2 GB that uploads before a pack, so it starts once one is on the account. An MP3 copy of the same show is about 230 MB.

Talk from a band day too

On a recording day the L-12 captures songs and everything said between them. Music is not transcribed, so the text holds the count-ins, the arrangement notes and the decisions about which take to keep. A podcast with five hosts comes back as a readable show.

Mixer-recorder sessions elsewhere

Multitrack is the right way to record and the wrong thing to send for transcription.

✗ Common missteps

A tidy recording, a messy route to text.

  • One channel uploaded, four voices missing
  • Every track billed separately
  • A 25 MB cap on Whisper's API
  • 4 GB masters turned away
  • Hours stitched back together by hand
  • Decisions lost between songs

✓ Upload the master

The session as one readable record.

  • The stereo master as recorded
  • About 8 minutes for 4 hours
  • Up to 10 hours per file
  • Chapters through the whole show
  • Hosts and guests named in quotes
  • DOCX for whoever writes the notes

FAQ

Zoom LiveTrak L-12 recordings, the common questions.

How long does a 4-hour L-12 master take?

About 8 minutes. At roughly 2 minutes for every hour of audio, a full 10-hour day finishes in around 20.

What does a regular show cost?

Your first visit includes the opening 20 minutes free. One 4-hour master uses 240 minutes of the $6 pack of 500 minutes. Eight of them, 1,920 minutes, fit the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes. Twenty weekly shows come to 4,800 minutes, which fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes.

I cannot find a master file. What now?

Bring the channel WAVs into a DAW or audio editor, line them up at the start, and export one mono or stereo mix. Upload that. Check the recorder's settings for the next session so the master is written too.

Does music on the recording get transcribed?

No. Songs, sound effects and crowd noise stay out; speech is transcribed. A word sung over a loud guitar may be missed, while a word spoken in a quiet gap is kept.

Is there an app or add-on for the L-12?

No. WhipScribe has no integration with Zoom hardware, and nothing runs on the mixer. Copy the master off the card and upload it, or paste a link if the show is already on YouTube or a podcast feed.

Which files come back, and is the session private?

You get TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON from the master. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete the session and its transcript at any time.
