Zencastr MP3 or WAV · about 2 min per audio hour · first 20 min free

Transcribe a long Zencastr session one guest or the whole session.

A long Zencastr session transcribes from the files on its episode page, and a 90-minute interview is ready in about 3 minutes. Upload a combined recording if the episode has one so the session counts once; otherwise upload each guest's track. The first 20 minutes are free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the rest.

How Zencastr records

Zencastr records every guest on their own machine. That shapes which file you send.

A track per guest

Each person in a Zencastr session is recorded separately, so the episode page lists a file for every guest, usually as MP3 or WAV depending on your settings. One track uploaded gives one voice's words with that guest's timeline, which is useful for an interview where only the answers matter.

The combined file, when there is one

If the episode page offers a combined or mixed recording, upload that for the full conversation. Every voice is on one clock, the brief and chapters follow the discussion as it happened, and the session is counted once rather than once per guest.

Long sessions in WAV

A WAV track from a long session can run to several hundred megabytes, while an MP3 of the same track is a fraction of that. Either goes in. A file larger than the box on this page continues on the upload page, up to 5 GB and 10 hours per file.

Interview into article

The transcript comes back with a brief, chapters with timestamps, the names, numbers and dates the guest gave, and the questions the conversation answered. Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, so a quote can be attributed and checked against its time.

Why long remote sessions wait

Every guest's audio arrives clean. The words still have to come out of it.

✗ Clean tracks, no text

Good audio for the edit, but every quote still means listening back.

  • Typing out a 90-minute interview
  • Paying per hour for each separate track
  • Tools that refuse a long WAV
  • Quotes nobody can place in time
  • Show notes put off until next week
  • Each guest's answers in a different file

✓ One upload per file

Each file goes up as it is and comes back as text with its own clock.

  • About 3 minutes for 90 minutes
  • Free for the first 20 minutes
  • $6 pack of 500 minutes, no renewal
  • Every guest named in the brief
  • Chapters for the episode page
  • DOCX for the edited interview

00:12:30 Take me back to the first season. How many people were listening when you decided to keep going?
00:13:02 About two hundred a week. The number did not matter as much as the emails. People wrote in about every episode.
00:58:44 You moved to weekly episodes in the third year. What did that cost you?
00:59:15 Sleep, mostly. And it meant saying no to guests I liked, because the schedule could not stretch.

FAQ

Zencastr recordings, the common questions.

How long does a 90-minute Zencastr session take to transcribe?

About 3 minutes after upload, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A 3-hour roundtable takes about 6. Each track you upload is processed on its own, and the transcripts wait in your Library when they finish.

Should I upload each guest's track or a combined file?

A combined file if the episode has one: it reads as a conversation and counts once. Separate tracks suit work on one voice. A 90-minute session with four guests is 90 minutes as one file and 360 minutes as four tracks.

What does a run of long sessions cost?

Ten 90-minute interviews as combined files are 900 minutes, which the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) covers with room to spare. A single session fits the $6 pack (500 minutes). The minutes never expire and there is no subscription.

Is there a size limit for a long Zencastr WAV?

Per file, the ceiling is 10 hours or 5 GB. Before a pack is on the account, uploads go up to 2 GB, and a larger file starts once a pack is added. A session over 10 hours goes in as two files.

Can it handle a guest speaking another language?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, including Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Afrikaans. A session that switches language is detected on its main language, and English with Tagalog in one recording is handled.

Which formats come back, and is my audio private?

You get the session back as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Zencastr tracks you upload are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and each file with its transcript can be deleted at any time.
