Lavalier field recorder · 4 h in about 8 min

Transcribe long Zoom F1 recordings from the beltpack's microSD card to a document.

A 4-hour interview day recorded on a Zoom F1 with its lavalier is text in about 8 minutes once the WAV is copied off the card and uploaded. The first 20 minutes are free, and the 240 minutes fit the $6 pack of 500; a WAV over 2 GB starts once a pack is on the account.

Card to transcript

The F1 hides on a belt and records all day. The card holds hours you still need in writing.

Off the microSD card

The F1 writes to a microSD card. Take the card out and use a reader, or connect the recorder to a computer by USB if your unit offers card-reader mode. Long takes may be saved as more than one file; upload them in order, or join them in an editor so the timestamps run through the day.

How big a lav day gets

A 24-bit WAV at 48 kHz is about 518 MB an hour in mono and twice that in stereo, so four stereo hours come to roughly 4.1 GB. That is under the 5 GB a single file may be, but over the 2 GB allowed before a first pack, and far over the 500 MB box here, so buy a pack first and upload on the main upload page, or export a mono or MP3 copy.

One wearer, clearly

A lavalier favours the person wearing it. Interviewers who need both sides loud enough should clip a second mic on the guest, or keep a room recorder running and transcribe the clearer file. Wind and clothing rustle are not transcribed; the speech is.

A week of fieldwork

Five 4-hour days come to 1,200 minutes, more than the smallest pack, so the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes fits with 800 left. Each day returns with a brief, chapters with timestamps, and the names, places and dates spoken; the public proof shows 9.31 hours finished in 1,033 seconds.

Field audio elsewhere

A beltpack recorder captures the day. Turning four hours into notes takes the evening.

✗ Usually

The card fills faster than anyone transcribes it.

  • Big WAVs refused by upload tools
  • The OpenAI Whisper API's 25 MB limit
  • Days split into short pieces to fit
  • Quotes found by scrubbing the timeline
  • Place names copied wrongly by ear
  • Field days backed up and never read

✓ Here

FAQ

Zoom F1 recordings, the common questions.

How long does a 4-hour F1 recording take?

About 8 minutes, at roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. A 45-minute interview is ready in about a minute and a half.

Will a 4 GB WAV upload?

Yes, on the main upload page, once a pack is on the account: one file may be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and before a first pack the cap is 2 GB. The box on this page takes 500 MB.

What does a week of field days cost?

Five 4-hour days are 1,200 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000. One day of 240 minutes fits the $6 pack of 500, and the first 20 minutes are free on a first visit.

My recording runs over 10 hours. What then?

Split it into two files, each under 10 hours and 5 GB, and upload both; each returns its own transcript and chapters.

Is there a Zoom F1 integration?

No. Nothing connects to the recorder, and no app or companion software is needed. You copy the files off the card on a computer and upload them, one day at a time or a whole week at once.

Does it handle other languages, and where does the WAV go?

Field interviews in any of 99 languages are detected automatically, with no setting to choose. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Field recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
