Transcribe multi-hour interviews from a Zoom H4essential every track mixed into one file.
A 3-hour interview recorded on a Zoom H4essential is transcribed in about 6 minutes when you upload one mix of its tracks, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. The first 20 minutes are free, the interview takes 180 minutes of the $6 pack of 500, and a ten-interview project of 1,800 minutes fits the $12 pack of 2,000.
Four tracks, one transcript
The H4essential can keep the built-in mics and two XLR inputs apart. For a transcript, they belong together.
What is on the card
The recorder saves to microSD. Depending on how the inputs were set, one take can leave a stereo WAV from the X/Y mics plus a separate WAV for each XLR input, usually grouped by take; open the card in a file browser before you pick one.
Why to mix first
If the guest wore a lavalier on input 1 and you held a mic on input 2, each file hears one person clearly and the other faintly. Line the tracks up in an editor and export one mix, so questions and answers land in a single transcript in order.
Sizes at 32-bit float
A mono float track at 48 kHz is about 691 MB an hour, so each input of a 3-hour interview is near 2.1 GB. A mono mix exported at 16-bit is about 1 GB for the same three hours, which uploads before any pack is bought.
From tape to project
Each interview comes back with a brief, chapters with timestamps, the names, places and dates mentioned, and key quotes with the speaker named. Across ten interviews the transcripts become a set you can search, and the chat finds the minute a participant mentioned a particular employer or year.
Long interviews elsewhere
Four clean tracks are a gift in the edit and a headache at upload time.
✗ The usual detours
Good audio, split across files, stuck behind limits.
- A 25 MB cap on the OpenAI Whisper API
- Each track transcribed as its own document
- The interviewer missing from the guest's file
- Two-gigabyte WAVs cut into pieces
- Quotes found by scrubbing through hours
- A project that stalls at interview four
✓ One interview, one document
A single mix in, a single readable record out.
- Tracks mixed down, voices balanced
- Three hours back in about 6 minutes
- Quotes credited to the right speaker
- Names and dates listed for checking
- The opening 20 minutes of the first interview free
- Ten interviews on a $12 pack

FAQ
Zoom H4essential recordings, the common questions.
How long does a 3-hour H4essential interview take?
About 6 minutes once uploaded. A 90-minute follow-up interview takes around 3.
Which file should I upload from a take?
A mix of every track that holds a voice. If you only have time for one file, choose the stereo X/Y file when the recorder sat between the speakers, because it hears both of them; choose an XLR track only when one person spoke for the whole session.
How much is a ten-interview project?
Ten interviews of three hours are 1,800 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000 with 200 to spare. A single interview fits the $6 pack of 500, and a first visit includes the first 20 minutes free.
What are the size limits?
A file can run to 10 hours or 5 GB. Uploads up to 2 GB start before a pack; larger ones start once a pack is on the account. A mono 16-bit mix of a long interview is usually the easiest file to send.
Does WhipScribe connect to the H4essential?
No. There is no integration and nothing to install on the recorder's side. Copy the files off the microSD, mix them if needed, and upload, or put the mix in Google Drive and paste the share link.
Languages, exports and privacy?
Interviews in any of 99 languages are detected automatically, and one that switches language is detected on its main one. Each downloads as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Participants' words stay out of training data: recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
