VOB · 1 GB pieces · 1.8 to 3.6 GB per hour

Transcribe long VOB files a whole DVD title, one transcript.

DVD video runs about 1.8 to 3.6 GB per hour and is stored as VOB files of up to 1 GB each, so a 2-hour lecture or ceremony disc usually spans four or five VOBs. Join the title's VOBs, or take its audio as an MP3 of about 115 MB, and upload one file up to 10 hours or 5 GB; it transcribes at about 2 minutes per audio hour and the first 20 minutes are free.

VOB, worked out

A DVD cuts its video into 1 GB pieces. The talk on it runs straight through.

How a disc is laid out

Open a DVD and the VIDEO_TS folder holds files named VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and onward. Each piece stops at 1 GB, wherever that falls, so the breaks land mid-sentence rather than at chapters. The file ending in _0 is usually the menu, and one long title is the run of numbered pieces after it.

Gigabytes per hour

DVD video is usually encoded at 4 to 8 Mbps, which is about 1.8 to 3.6 GB an hour. A two-hour graduation filling a single-layer disc is around 4 GB: under the 5 GB ceiling, over the 2 GB that uploads before a pack. A dual-layer disc can pass 5 GB on its own.

Join it, or take the sound

Join one title's VOBs in order into a single file with ffmpeg or VLC, or export only the audio. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first; at 128 kbps two hours is about 115 MB and goes straight onto the upload page with one continuous clock.

A ceremony on paper

The disc comes back with a brief, chapters for each speech or lecture section, the names, dates and figures read out, and a chat over the text. Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, which helps when the programme had a dozen of them.

Why DVDs are awkward to transcribe

Upload one VOB and you get twenty-odd minutes of a two-hour event.

✗ Piece by piece

Treating each VOB as its own recording breaks the event at arbitrary points.

  • Sentences cut at each 1 GB boundary
  • Four or five transcripts for one lecture
  • Timestamps that reset every piece
  • Menu loops transcribed by mistake
  • Gigabytes of picture uploaded for the sound
  • Speakers renamed in every part

✓ One title, one timeline

Join the VOBs or extract the audio, and the whole event comes back as one text.

  • 10 hours or 5 GB in a single upload
  • Two minutes per audio hour, roughly
  • The disc's first 20 minutes at no charge
  • $6 for 500 minutes covers a few discs
  • Chapters at each speech
  • Subtitles as SRT or VTT for the disc

Sample

A graduation ceremony, filmed to DVD.

This is an illustrative ceremony written for the page, not footage of a real one. Timestamps mark where each speech falls in a joined DVD title.

FAQ

Long VOB files, the common questions.

How long does a DVD take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes per hour of audio after the upload, so a 2-hour disc takes roughly 4 minutes. Uploading 4 GB of video is the slow part on most connections, which is why the MP3 route is faster.

What does a DVD lecture series cost?

A 3-hour ceremony disc is 180 minutes on the $6 pack of 500. A series of twelve 2-hour lecture discs is 1,440 minutes, which fits the $12 pack of 2,000. Over 2,000 minutes, the $24 pack covers 5,000.

How big is a VOB per hour?

DVD video at 4 to 8 Mbps is about 1.8 to 3.6 GB an hour, and each VOB file stops at 1 GB. The audio alone, as a 128 kbps MP3, is about 58 MB an hour.

Should I upload each VOB file separately?

Better not. Each piece breaks at 1 GB, not at a chapter, so separate uploads split sentences and restart the clock. Join the numbered VOBs of one title, or extract its audio, and upload that as one file of up to 10 hours.

Which languages can the disc be in?

99 languages, detected automatically, so a lecture in Portuguese or a ceremony in Hebrew needs no setting. Songs and organ music on the disc are not transcribed; the speeches are.

Which exports come back, and what happens to the video?

Each disc's text saves as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. DVD uploads are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete the file and its transcript at any point.
