Transcribe a long WavPack file straight from the archive drive.
A WavPack (.wv) file is lossless audio, often about half the size of the WAV it replaced, so a CD-quality hour is commonly near 300 MB and a 10-hour recording stays under 5 GB. If the upload refuses the .wv, convert it to MP3 first; it then transcribes at about 2 minutes per hour, with the first 20 minutes free and $6 for 500 minutes after that.
WavPack, worked out
An open lossless format, and a quick route to text when a tool will not read it.
What WavPack is
WavPack is an open-source lossless codec with an optional hybrid mode. In hybrid mode it writes a small lossy .wv file and a separate .wvc correction file; together they rebuild the original exactly, and the .wv alone still plays. For a transcript, the .wv on its own is plenty.
How big an hour gets
Start from the uncompressed rate: 44.1 kHz × 16 bits × 2 channels is 1,411,200 bits a second, about 635 MB an hour. Lossless WavPack often halves that to near 300 MB. A 48 kHz 24-bit recording starts at about 1 GB an hour, so its .wv is larger.
Where the limits come in
At 300 MB an hour, 10 hours is about 3 GB, so the 10-hour line arrives first. A 24-bit .wv near 500 MB an hour reaches 5 GB at the 10-hour mark. A .wv over 2 GB starts once a pack is on the account.
When to convert
Upload the .wv on the upload page. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first: ffmpeg -i session.wv -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k session.mp3 does it, and foobar2000 can convert a whole folder.
Why .wv files get turned away
Few transcription tools list WavPack, and fewer take hours of it.
✗ A format left off the list
A 300 MB hour of WavPack is about twelve times the OpenAI Whisper API's documented 25 MB upload limit.
- Formats that are not recognised
- Megabyte limits on every upload
- Converting and then splitting too
- Piecemeal timestamps per part
- Retyping notes from playback
- No summary for the whole session
✓ Lossless in, one transcript out
A converted copy of a few hundred megabytes, or the .wv itself, comes back as one document.
- A single upload of up to 10 h or 5 GB
- Roughly 2 minutes for every audio hour
- No charge for the opening 20 .wv minutes
- $6 buys 500 minutes, $12 buys 2,000
- Every name, place and date gathered
- Five export formats

A long research interview kept in WavPack, hour five.
This sample is illustrative and was made up for this page; it is not a real interview. Timestamps place each line in a long .wv recording.

FAQ
Long WavPack files, answered.
How long does a long .wv file take to transcribe?
About 2 minutes for every hour of audio, so a 5-hour WavPack recording is ready in about 10 minutes. A 9.31-hour file took 1,033 seconds in the timed runs on the proof page.
What does a 5-hour .wv cost?
A 5-hour .wv counts as 300 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free; the $6 pack (500 minutes) transcribes the rest and leaves 200 minutes. For 25 hours of interviews, 1,500 minutes, the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) fits.
Do I need the .wvc correction file?
No. A hybrid .wv plays without its .wvc, and the transcript comes from the speech, which the .wv carries. Keep the .wvc in your archive for the lossless copy.
My .wv is longer than 10 hours. Now what?
Cut it at a pause into two .wv or MP3 files and upload both. Each part gets a transcript that starts at zero, so name them in order.
Which languages are recognised in a WavPack recording?
99, detected automatically, Swedish, Zulu and Portuguese among them. If speakers switch language mid-recording, the main language is detected and the switches are handled.
What can I export, and does the .wv stay private?
WavPack transcripts export in five formats: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Research recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training; delete the file and transcript once you have them.
