Transcribe Punjabi gurdwara katha from the diwan recording to searchable Gurmukhi.
A 90-minute Punjabi katha recorded at a gurdwara in Canada comes back as Gurmukhi text in about 3 minutes, with Punjabi detected automatically and the first 20 minutes free. Five such kathas, 450 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes, and the sung kirtan around them is left out because music is not transcribed.
For the sevadar who handles the recording
The katha is heard once in the darbar hall. Written down, the sangat can return to it all week.
Cut the katha out of the diwan, or don't
A full Sunday diwan can run three hours with kirtan, ardas and announcements. Upload it whole and the spoken parts come back as text while the shabads leave a gap, or trim to the katha alone if you only need the discourse.
Themes become chapters
The katha vachak moves from a line of Gurbani to a sakhi to its meaning for daily life. Chapters with timestamps mark each move, so a sevadar can find the sakhi about seva without scrubbing through the video.
Plan one review pass
Punjabi output is a fast first draft, so plan one review pass before anything is printed or posted. A sevadar who reads Gurmukhi should check quoted Gurbani lines against the source, along with names, places and dates.
Livestreams go in as a link
If the diwan was streamed to YouTube, paste the link and nothing has to upload. A camera file of the full program goes through the upload page.
Where katha recordings end up
Every week a discourse is streamed, archived, and never opened again.
✗ The archive today
Hours of katha sit on a channel or a hard drive in the gurdwara office, and the only index is the date in the file name.
- No way to search a discourse for a sakhi
- Younger members who read English more easily left out
- A volunteer typing notes by ear for hours
- Kirtan and katha mixed in one long file
- Three-hour camera files too large to email
- English-only tools that cannot read Punjabi
✓ With the transcript
The katha is text the same afternoon, with chapters and a brief the committee can share.
- Gurmukhi text with timestamps
- Chapters at each sakhi and theme
- The katha vachak named in the summary
- Dates and names from the announcements listed
- SRT captions for the stream replay
- Five 90-minute kathas on $6

FAQ
Punjabi katha recordings, answered.
How long does a 90-minute katha take?
About 3 minutes, at roughly 2 minutes of processing per hour of audio. A full three-hour diwan recording takes about 6, and the kirtan inside it does not slow anything down because only speech is turned into text. Upload after the program and the text is ready before the sangat has finished langar.
What does a month or a year of katha cost?
One 90-minute katha uses 90 minutes, so five of them, 450 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500. A month of hour-long evening katha every day is 1,800 minutes on the $12 pack of 2,000, and a year of weekly 90-minute kathas, 4,680 minutes, fits the $24 pack of 5,000. Credits never expire, so a pack bought for Gurpurab can carry on into the next season.
Our camera file of the whole diwan is huge. Will it go through?
At 4 Mbps, an hour of video is 4,000,000 bits per second times 3,600 seconds divided by 8, about 1.8 GB, so three hours is near 5.4 GB and over the 5 GB per-file limit. Trim to the katha, export audio only, or paste the YouTube link of the stream. Before a first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB; one file can run up to 10 hours.
What should a sevadar check before the text is posted?
The vocabulary of katha, Gurbani quotations and the names of Gurus, places and families deserve a careful read by someone fluent in Gurmukhi. The chapters, timestamps and brief make that read much faster than typing the whole discourse from the recording.
The katha vachak explains some points in English. Does that break it?
No. The recording is detected on its main language, Punjabi, and English sentences inside it are handled in the same transcript. You never choose a language; 99 are detected automatically.
What can we download, and where does the recording go?
TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, so an ardas with family names read aloud is not reused anywhere.
