Transcribe a recording made in a temple the discourse, not the bells.
A temple discourse or dharma talk of one to three hours comes back as text at about 2 minutes per audio hour, so a two-hour talk is ready in roughly 4 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and a $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the rest of a long talk with hours to spare.
Recording in a temple hall
Bells, chanting and a hard floor, then an hour of careful speech.
What the hall adds
Marble or wooden floors and a high ceiling give a long tail of echo, and a recorder near the teacher's seat also catches bells, conch, footsteps and the crowd settling. The talk itself is usually slow and deliberate, which suits transcription well once the ceremony gives way to speech.
Chant and kirtan are left aside
Chanting, bhajans, kirtan and sung sutras behave like music and are not reliably turned into text. Expect the spoken discourse, the explanations of each verse and the question time to come back, with gaps where the chanting ran.
Talks that move between languages
A discourse may be given in Hindi, Gujarati or Japanese with verses quoted in Sanskrit or Pali. The recording is detected on its main language and transcribed in it, so the quoted verses are the lines to check; the explanation around them reads cleanly.
A retreat in one sitting
A three-day retreat with six hours of talks a day is 1,080 minutes. Upload each day as a file of up to 10 hours; the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes covers all three days with 920 minutes left for the next gathering.
Why these talks get lost
The recording exists. Finding one teaching inside it is the hard part.
✗ Leaving it as audio
A three-hour recording sits on a drive and the one story people remember cannot be found again.
- Hours of audio with no index
- A devotee typing for days
- Captions that stumble on quoted verses
- Files too large for most tools
- Retreat days split into fragments
- Payment every month for occasional use
✓ Turning it into a text archive
Each talk becomes a document with chapters, quotes and the questions it answered.
- Around 2 minutes per hour of talk
- Chapters at each new teaching
- Quotes with times to play back
- The questions from the hall listed
- Credits that wait for the next festival
- Exports in TXT through JSON

FAQ
Temple recordings, plainly answered.
How long does a long discourse take?
Roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. A three-hour discourse comes back in about 6 minutes, and a single hour in about two.
What would a whole retreat cost?
On a first visit, the first 20 minutes cost nothing. One two-hour talk fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes. A three-day retreat of eighteen hours, 1,080 minutes, fits the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes.
Which languages can it handle?
99 languages are detected automatically, Hindi, Japanese and Korean among them. A talk is transcribed on its main language, so verses quoted in Sanskrit or Pali inside a Hindi or English talk are the part to review.
Is a full day of recording too long?
A single file can run up to 10 hours or 5 GB. A longer day goes in as two files. Until a pack is on the account, uploads top out at 2 GB; above that size, the file starts once a pack is on the account.
Will the chanting appear?
Mostly not. Chanting and devotional singing are treated like music, which is not transcribed. The spoken teaching and the talk around each chant come back in full.
Which formats can we download, and is the recording private?
TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, all from one run. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, so a teacher's talk does not end up in anyone's model.
