Transcribe Tamil temple discourses the whole talk, written down in Tamil.

A 3-hour Tamil temple discourse is transcribed in about 6 minutes, with Tamil detected automatically and the spoken teaching kept while the devotional songs, chanting and recitation are left out. The first 20 minutes are free, and a ten-evening series of 150-minute talks is 1,500 minutes, which fits on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes.

For temple committees and devotees

A long evening discourse, kept as text that devotees can read again.

The explanation, without the singing

A discourse moves between a sung verse and the speaker's explanation of it. Religious music, chanting and recitation are not transcribed; the teaching and the speech are. The timestamps leave a visible gap where a verse was sung, so you can add the verse text yourself from the source. Spoken quotations of a verse, said rather than sung, are speech and appear in the transcript.

A festival series in numbers

Three evenings of 150 minutes are 450 minutes on the $6 pack of 500. A ten-evening series of the same length is 1,500 minutes on the $12 pack of 2,000. A year of monthly 3-hour talks is 2,160 minutes and belongs on the $24 pack of 5,000. Prices are quoted in US dollars, as everywhere on this site.

From the hall recorder or the stream

If the discourse was streamed to YouTube, paste the link. If it sits on the sound desk's recorder or a phone, upload the file as it is; a 3-hour recording does not need cutting. Very large video files continue on upload page.

A booklet starts from the brief

Each talk returns with a brief of its main teaching, chapters marking each theme with timestamps, the names and dates the speaker mentioned, and the questions the discourse answered. The speaker is named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

What happens to most discourse recordings

The talk is recorded every evening, then nobody has time to write it down.

✗ Recordings on a drive

A volunteer who types Tamil can manage a few pages a week, and a series of evening talks never reaches them. Devotees who missed an evening, or who want to read the explanation slowly, are left with a long video and no index.

  • One volunteer typing Tamil
  • Weeks per evening of talk
  • Software that expects English devotional talks
  • Songs garbled into the text
  • A three-hour file chopped to get it uploaded
  • No way to find one explanation again

✓ A readable series

Each evening is in Tamil text with chapters on the night it was given.

  • Six minutes or so for a full evening's talk
  • Tamil identified from the audio
  • Chanting left out, teaching kept
  • Speaker named in the summary
  • Chapters for each theme
  • A ten-evening series on the $12 pack

Sample

An evening discourse, before and after a sung verse.

This sample is illustrative and written for this page; it does not quote any temple or speaker. The gap between the second and third timestamps is where a verse was sung and therefore not transcribed.

FAQ

Tamil discourses, answered.

How long does a 3-hour discourse take?

Close to 6 minutes. Transcription runs at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 2-hour talk needs about 4. Our public proof page shows a 4.94-hour file finished in 372 seconds.

What does a festival series cost?

Ten evenings of 150 minutes each are 1,500 minutes, which the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes covers. Three evenings fit the $6 pack of 500, and your first 20 minutes are free so you can try one talk first.

Does the file need splitting?

No. A single upload may run to 10 hours or 5 GB, whichever is reached first. Before the first pack an upload can be up to 2 GB, which holds a 3-hour audio recording easily; a long video from a camera may need the pack first.

Are the sung verses and chanting transcribed?

No. Religious music, chanting and recitation are not transcribed; the teaching and the speech are. When the speaker quotes a verse in a speaking voice, that is speech and it appears in the text.

What if the speaker uses Sanskrit terms or English words?

The discourse is detected on its main language, Tamil, and switches into English are handled. Sanskrit terms and names of texts are worth checking in one read through, because they are the words a general model hears least often.

What files come back, and is the discourse kept private?

Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, so a booklet editor and a video editor both get a file they can use. Discourse recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
