What comes back from one episode

The kōrero goes in. Show notes, captions and quotes come out.

Te reo, recognised on its own

Nobody picks a language before uploading an episode. The episode is detected on its main language, so a show held mostly in te reo is read as te reo, and a show that moves between te reo and English keeps the switches. Te reo accuracy trails the major world languages, so treat the text as a fast first draft, plan one review pass with a fluent speaker before it is published.

Feed, link or file

If the episode sits in a podcast RSS feed or on YouTube, paste the link and nothing needs downloading. A recording exported from your editing software goes straight into upload page, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file.

Show notes that write themselves

Each episode returns a brief with its thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps, and the names, places and dates said on air. Hosts and guests are named in the summary, the key quotes and the chapters, which is most of what a show notes page needs.

Captions for the filmed version

Many kōrero podcasts also go out as video. The SRT and VTT files carry timings that match the audio you sent, so they line up with the video if both come from the same recording session.

Why long te reo episodes are hard to transcribe

Few tools are built for an hour of te reo, and typing it costs a week of evenings.

✗ Doing it the slow way

A fluent volunteer typing a two-hour episode by hand can spend ten hours or more on it, and the queue grows faster than the volunteers.

  • Ten hours of typing for one episode
  • Free tiers that stop after a few minutes
  • Tools that assume the episode is English
  • Upload caps far below a two-hour WAV
  • No timestamps to cut clips from
  • A backlog of episodes nobody can search

✓ A draft to correct instead

A fluent reader corrects a draft in a fraction of the time it takes to type from silence.

  • A two-hour kōrero in about 4 minutes
  • Your opening 20 minutes are free
  • Language picked up from the audio
  • Episodes up to 10 h or 5 GB, unsplit
  • Chapters with timestamps
  • The whole back catalogue searchable

Sample

A bilingual episode, as it comes back.

This sample is illustrative and was written for this page; it is not from any real podcast. Labels show the part of the episode, not a person, and the te reo lines are generic greetings and topic lines.

FAQ

Te reo podcasts, the questions people ask.

How long does a two-hour te reo episode take?

About 4 minutes, at a pace of roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A one-hour episode is usually ready in about 2, which is less time than it takes to write the episode title and description.

What does a season of episodes cost?

A season of twelve weekly episodes of 90 minutes each comes to 1,080 minutes, which sits on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes at about $0.36 an audio hour, with 920 minutes left for the next season. A single month of four one-hour episodes uses 240 minutes of a $6 pack.

How big can the file be, and do I need to split it?

One file can run to 10 hours or 5 GB, whichever comes first, so an episode never needs cutting. A two-hour WAV at CD quality is about 1.27 GB (1,411 kbps times 7,200 seconds), well inside the 2 GB that uploads can reach before the first pack. The same two hours as a 128 kbps MP3 come to roughly 115 MB.

Will it understand te reo Māori, and English in the same episode?

Te reo Māori is one of 99 languages detected automatically. Each recording is detected on its main language and the switches into English or back are handled. Te reo accuracy is lower than for English, so budget a read-through by a fluent speaker, especially for names, whakataukī and place names.

Which files come back, and who sees the recording?

A finished kōrero can be saved as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete an episode and its transcript whenever you choose.

Can the transcript go on our website for listeners who prefer to read?

Yes. Export DOCX or TXT after the review pass and publish it under the episode. A text version helps listeners who are hard of hearing, learners who want to read along, and search engines that cannot listen to audio.
