Transcribe a long DTS file from disc surround to plain text.
A long DTS track from a disc runs about 346 MB per hour at 768 kbps and about 679 MB per hour at 1,509 kbps, so at the higher rate the 5 GB limit arrives near 7.4 hours, before the 10-hour one. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to a stereo MP3 first; the first 20 minutes are free and a 3-hour disc fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes.
DTS, worked out
DTS spends a lot of bits on surround. For the words, a stereo copy does the same job.
A heavy format by design
DTS was built for cinema-style sound on DVD and Blu-ray, so it uses far more data than speech needs. Core DTS on DVD runs at 768 or 1,509 kbps, and the lossless DTS-HD tracks on Blu-ray run larger again. A separate .dts file usually comes from pulling the soundtrack off a disc you made or have the rights to.
Where 2 GB and 5 GB fall
At 768 kbps an hour is about 346 MB, so ten hours is roughly 3.5 GB: over the 2 GB that uploads before a pack, under 5 GB. At 1,509 kbps an hour is about 679 MB; 2 GB arrives near 2.9 hours and 5 GB near 7.4 hours.
The stereo MP3 route
If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first, downmixed to stereo. At 128 kbps that is about 58 MB an hour, a tenth of the high-rate DTS, so even a long disc soundtrack goes up quickly on the upload page and starts before any pack.
What the disc gives back
A recorded talk, stage event or documentary interview returns as a brief with the main points, timed chapters, the names, figures and dates spoken, and a chat over the text. People on the recording are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.
Why DTS tracks get stuck
A soundtrack of this size trips upload limits that were never meant for it.
✗ Built for speakers, not for text
One hour of high-rate DTS is about 27 times the OpenAI Whisper API's documented 25 MB upload limit.
- Megabyte caps that refuse the file
- Surround channels most tools cannot read
- Splitting a disc into many small parts
- A clock that restarts in every part
- Music and effects mistaken for speech
- No summary of the full programme
✓ Speech out of the surround
One file per disc, up to 5 GB, or a stereo MP3 that is far smaller.
- One file up to 10 hours or 5 GB
- Ready at about 2 minutes per audio hour
- The opening 20 minutes are free
- $12 buys 2,000 minutes for a disc set
- Chapters timed across the programme
- Disc subtitles as SRT or VTT

FAQ
Long DTS files, the common questions.
How long does a long DTS track take to transcribe?
About 2 minutes per hour of audio once uploaded, so a 3-hour soundtrack takes roughly 6 minutes. A multi-gigabyte DTS file can take longer to upload than to process, which is another reason the stereo MP3 route is quicker.
What does a disc set cost?
A 3-hour disc is 180 minutes on the $6 pack of 500. A twelve-disc lecture set of 2 hours each is 24 hours, or 1,440 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000. Above 2,000 minutes, the $24 pack covers 5,000.
How big is a DTS file per hour?
About 346 MB at 768 kbps and 679 MB at 1,509 kbps, worked from bitrate times 3,600 seconds divided by 8. Lossless DTS-HD on Blu-ray is larger and varies with the content, so check the file size before you upload.
My DTS file is over 5 GB, or the disc runs past 10 hours. What then?
Convert it to a stereo MP3, which takes ten hours down to under 600 MB. If the programme itself runs longer than 10 hours, split it into two files at a natural break and upload both.
Can it handle languages other than English?
Yes: 99 languages, detected automatically, Korean, Portuguese and Swedish among them. A recording that switches languages is detected on its main one. Soundtrack music and effects are not transcribed; the speech is.
What formats do I get, and is the file private?
You get plain text, a Word file, SRT and VTT captions, and JSON with timings. DTS uploads are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
