Transcribe long interview recordings recorded in Japan.

A long interview recorded in Japan, whether a 90-minute journalism sit-down, a two-hour oral history session or a run of HR interviews, goes in as one file and comes back at about 2 minutes per audio hour. Japanese is detected automatically, the first 20 minutes are free, and a $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the rest of several interviews.

What an interview needs

The whole conversation, with the answer you need findable by its minute.

Japanese without a setting

The language is detected from the audio itself, so a Japanese interview, an English one, or one that drifts between the two needs no choice before upload. The text keeps the wording as spoken, which matters when you later quote a source.

Long sessions in one piece

Oral history and life-story interviews often run past two hours with a short break in the middle. Leave the recorder file whole: one file can hold up to 10 hours, so the interview keeps a single timeline from greeting to thanks.

The cost of a ten-interview project

Ten interviews of 90 minutes each add up to 900 minutes, which sits on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes with room for a dozen more. A single two-hour interview uses 120 of the $6 pack's 500.

Quotes you can stand behind

Each recording comes back with a brief, chapters with timestamps, key quotes with the speaker named, and the names, numbers and dates that were said. Large recorder files go through upload page.

Where long interviews stall

Ninety minutes of talk is a full working day to type by hand.

✗ Typing it or forcing it into short tools

Manual transcription of a long Japanese interview takes several times its running length, and many apps cut off well before the hour.

  • A whole day typing one interview
  • Free tiers that stop around 30 minutes
  • Splitting the recorder file to fit an upload cap
  • Losing your place between parts
  • No timestamps to recheck a quote
  • A language menu you must set first

✓ One upload per interview

The file goes in as recorded and the text keeps one clock from the first question.

  • Roughly 2 minutes of processing per hour
  • Japanese and English detected
  • A single file holds up to 10 hours
  • Quotes tied to their minute
  • The source named in the summary and chapters
  • DOCX ready for notes and appendices

00:04:10 Could you start with the year you joined the company, and what the factory floor looked like then?
00:04:22 I joined in the spring. There were two lines, and the second one only ran at night because the orders came from overseas.
01:12:47 You said earlier that the night line closed. Who made that decision?
01:13:05 The plant manager announced it, but the decision came from head office. We heard about it at the morning meeting.

FAQ

Long interviews from Japan, answered.

How long does a two-hour interview take to transcribe?

About 4 minutes, because processing runs at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A 90-minute interview is usually ready in about 3. You can leave the page and pick the text up later from your Library.

What does a set of long interviews cost?

Count the minutes and pick the pack that holds them. Four interviews of two hours each are 480 minutes, which fits the $6 pack of 500. Fifteen interviews of 90 minutes are 1,350 minutes and belong on the $12 pack of 2,000. Prices are in US dollars, credits never expire, and there is no subscription.

Does it handle Japanese, and an interview that mixes in English?

Japanese is one of 99 languages detected automatically. A recording that switches language is detected on its main language, so an interview held mostly in Japanese with English terms dropped in is transcribed as a Japanese recording.

My recorder made a 3 GB WAV file. Will it upload?

Before your first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB; a larger file starts once a pack is on the account, and the ceiling is 5 GB or 10 hours per file. Converting the WAV to MP3 or M4A shrinks it a great deal and transcribes the same way.

Should I split a long interview into parts?

No. One file holds up to 10 hours, which is longer than nearly any interview. Keeping it whole means one timeline, so a timestamp in your notes points to the same moment in the audio.

What can I export, and where does the interview audio go?

You get TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON from one pass. Interview recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete the file and the text whenever you choose.
