From the memo list to text

Audio Memos holds a long session well. Reading it back is another matter.

Exporting a memo

Open the recording in the app and look for its export or share option; depending on the version, it can send a file to the Files app, to a cloud service or to a computer. Saving into iCloud Drive or Google Drive is the easiest way to move a big file off the phone. Menus change between releases, so follow what your copy shows; a long memo can take a minute to export, so leave the app open until it finishes.

WAV versus compressed

Uncompressed audio is large: a mono 16-bit WAV at 44.1 kHz is about 318 MB an hour, so three hours is near 950 MB, more than the 500 MB this page's box takes; it continues on the main upload page and is well under the 5 GB one file can be. A compressed export of the same session is a fraction of that.

A month of sessions

A choir, a study group or a committee that meets for three hours each week records 720 minutes a month. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.

Reading a session back

The session returns with a brief, chapters at each new topic, and the names, numbers and dates said aloud. Speakers are identified and named in the summary and key quotes, and the chat over the transcript answers which part of the evening covered a given item.

Long memos elsewhere

A three-hour memo is easy to keep and hard to search.

✗ Before

The session lives as a waveform.

  • Big WAV files refused by email and chat apps
  • A 25 MB cap on the OpenAI Whisper API
  • Minutes written from rough notes
  • One remark found by dragging the playhead
  • Recordings split into hour-long pieces
  • Weekly sessions never transcribed

✓ After

A long session you can skim and quote.

  • Three hours ready in about 6 minutes
  • WAV up to 5 GB on the main upload page
  • Chapters through the evening
  • Dates and figures listed
  • Speakers named in the summary
  • A month of sessions on the $18 pack
