Transcribe long interviews recorded on an Audio-Technica ATR2100x research, oral history and journalism.

An Audio-Technica ATR2100x records over USB into a program or over XLR into a recorder, and the file from either path uploads here, a 2-hour interview returning as text in about 4 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and the 120 minutes fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes, which holds four such interviews.

Interviews, word for word

Long interviews are where a good microphone pays off, and where typing them up takes days.

One mic or two

Many interviewers run one ATR2100x into a laptop and sit close to the guest; others put two through a small mixer or interface. Over USB, the recording program writes the file. Over XLR, the recorder or interface does. Upload the one file that holds both voices, or mix two tracks into one first.

The arithmetic for a research project

A thesis project of twelve 2-hour interviews is 1,440 minutes. That is more than the $6 pack holds and fits the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes with 560 left for follow-ups. A pilot of four interviews, 480 minutes, fits the $6 pack on its own.

Quiet rooms, close mics

A dynamic mic like this one favours the voice nearest to it and turns down the room. Keep each speaker within a hand's width or two of their mic, and the long quiet answers come back as well as the loud ones. A shared mic set between two people catches both, less evenly.

Quotes you can cite

The text comes back with a brief, chapters with timestamps, and the names, places and dates said. The interviewee is named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and each quote carries its timestamp, so a citation can point to the minute in the recording.

Interview audio elsewhere

Typing up a 2-hour interview by hand takes most of a working day.

FAQ

ATR2100x interview recordings, the common questions.

How long does a 2-hour ATR2100x interview take?

About 4 minutes, because transcription takes roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. Twelve such interviews uploaded together still finish in well under an hour of waiting.

What will a whole interview study cost?

The first 20 minutes of your first upload are free. Four 2-hour interviews are 480 minutes on the $6 pack of 500 minutes. A study of twelve is 1,440 minutes on the $12 pack, and a larger project of thirty, 3,600 minutes, belongs on the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes.

I recorded each person on their own mic. What do I upload?

If the software saved one file with both voices, upload that. If each mic went to a separate file, mix them into one in Audacity or another editor first, otherwise each upload holds only half of the conversation.

What size is a long WAV interview?

A stereo 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV is about 635 MB an hour, so 2 hours is about 1.3 GB, under the 2 GB that uploads before a pack. Each file can go up to 5 GB or 10 hours.

The interview is in Spanish, with some English. Can it cope?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically and a recording that switches is detected on its main language. Spanish is among them, as are Hebrew, Swedish and Zulu.

Which exports come back, and how is the interview protected?

Exports: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, with DOCX the usual pick for coding software. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, which matters for participants who were promised confidentiality; you can delete the file and its text when the project ends.
