Transcribe a D2L Brightspace lecture recording the one your lecturer lets you download.
A Brightspace lecture or seminar you are allowed to download becomes a searchable transcript in about 5 minutes for 2.5 hours of audio, and the first 20 minutes are free. That 150-minute seminar uses 150 of the 500 minutes in a $6 pack, leaving 350 for the next ones. WhipScribe has no connection to Brightspace and nothing runs inside your course: you save the recording, then hand the file over here.
From course content to text
Brightspace holds the video. You need the words in it.
Download what you are allowed to
Lecture recordings sit inside a course's Content area, and whether a download button appears is the instructor's or the institution's choice. If you can save the video, it is yours to transcribe for study; if the option is missing, ask the lecturer for the file rather than working around the setting.
The file you end up with
A saved lecture is usually an MP4. If your browser names it something odd or the upload refuses the format, convert it to MP3 first and try again; the speech is all that matters here, and an MP3 of a 2.5-hour seminar is a small fraction of the video's size.
When the recording lives elsewhere
Some instructors embed a YouTube or Vimeo video in the course page, or post a Google Drive share link. Those links paste straight into upload page, with nothing to download, as long as the link opens for you outside the course.
One term, one pack
Twelve weeks of two 75-minute lectures come to 24 recordings and 1,800 minutes, which the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes covers with 200 to spare. A single seminar fits the $6 pack several times over.
Where Brightspace recordings get stuck
Scrubbing a two-hour video for one definition is slow. Reading it is not.
✗ The usual study routine
Students rewatch the lecture at double speed and pause to type.
- Rewatching to find one worked example
- A seminar too large for the 25 MB cap on OpenAI's Whisper API
- Cutting the video into parts by hand
- Notes that drift away from the lecture's order
- Nothing to search when revising
- A monthly plan for one course
✓ What you get here
The full seminar in reading order, with timestamps back into the video.
- The full session in a single upload
- Back in minutes
- Chapters for each topic change
- Names, dates and figures picked out
- Ask the transcript about any point
- DOCX notes and SRT captions

FAQ
Brightspace lecture recordings, answered.
How long does a 2.5-hour Brightspace seminar take?
About 5 minutes, since each hour of audio takes roughly 2. A 75-minute lecture is ready in under 3 minutes, and the transcript stays in your Library.
What would a semester of Brightspace lectures cost?
Add the minutes together. One 150-minute seminar fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes. Twenty-four 75-minute lectures total 1,800 minutes and fit the $12 pack of 2,000. On your first visit the first 20 minutes are free, and the pack continues from where that preview ended. Prices are in US dollars, and unused credits stay on the account.
Can I transcribe a recording I cannot download?
Only transcribe what the course lets you save, or what the lecturer sends you. WhipScribe works on the file after it reaches you; it cannot reach into Brightspace, and it is not meant to get around a download setting.
The lecture video is several gigabytes. Must it be split?
No need. One file can run 10 hours or reach 5 GB. Before your first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB, and a heavier file starts once a pack is on the account. Splitting only gives you separate transcripts with separate clocks.
Does it handle lectures in other languages?
Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, so a seminar delivered in French, Spanish or Korean comes back in that language. A lecture that switches language for a quotation is detected on its main language.
What can I export, and who sees the lecture?
Five exports: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Brightspace lectures you upload are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. Check your course rules before sharing a transcript beyond your own study.
