Transcribe long captures recorded through an Elgato HD60 commentary, talks and camera feeds.
An Elgato HD60 passes a console or camera feed to your computer, where Elgato's capture software or OBS Studio writes the recording, usually as an MP4; upload that file or just its audio, up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Five hours of commentary comes back in about 10 minutes, with the first 20 minutes free and the remaining 280 minutes inside the $6 pack of 500 minutes.
From capture card to transcript
A capture card records everything on the HDMI cable. You only need the part someone said.
Where the capture is saved
Elgato's capture software and OBS each write to a folder you choose in their settings, so open the recording settings if the file is not where you expect. The capture is usually an MP4, which uploads as it is.
Make a big capture small
At 40 Mbps a single hour is 40 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 18,000 MB, about 18 GB, far over the 5 GB limit. The same hour as an MP3 at 128 kbps is about 58 MB, so export the audio from your editor or a converter and send that instead.
Commentary over gameplay
Explosions, menu sounds and soundtrack are not transcribed; voices are. If your setup records the microphone on a separate track, export that track and the text comes out cleaner.
Camera feeds too
An HD60 also captures HDMI from a camera, so a filmed seminar or a long interview goes through the same path. The people speaking are identified and named in the summary, the key quotes and the chapters.
Long captures and their limits
A capture that looks fine on the timeline is often gigabytes too big to send anywhere.
✗ Where a long capture gets stuck
The commentary is in there, buried under the size.
- An hour of high-bitrate video near 18 GB
- OpenAI's Whisper API capped at 25 MB per upload
- Game audio drowning out the commentary
- Captures split in the editor before upload
- Searching a 5-hour run for one callout
- Playthrough notes written from memory
✓ Where it gets to as text
The audio alone is enough.
- An MP3 of 5 hours at about 288 MB
- Roughly 10 minutes for 5 hours
- Chapters through a long playthrough
- Callouts and numbers listed from the run
- SRT and VTT captions for the playthrough video
- A single file allowed to run 10 hours

FAQ
Elgato HD60 captures, answered.
Does WhipScribe connect to the HD60 or its software?
No. The card and its software record the file on your computer, and WhipScribe works on that file once you upload it. There is no plugin and nothing to install.
How quickly is a 5-hour capture done?
In about 10 minutes. Two minutes per audio hour is the rule of thumb, and the public 9.31-hour run on the proof page took 1,033 seconds.
What does a long playthrough cost?
Twenty minutes cost nothing the first time. A 5-hour capture takes 300 minutes of the $6 pack of 500 minutes. Eight of them, 2,400 minutes, outgrow the $12 pack and fit the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes.
The capture is several gigabytes. What now?
Before a pack, uploads go to 2 GB; after one, to 5 GB. Past that, send the audio only: the words are identical, and a 5-hour MP3 stays well under the limit.
Is in-game dialogue transcribed?
Spoken dialogue in the game's audio is speech, so it can come through alongside your commentary, while music and sound effects are left out. If you only want your own voice, upload the microphone track.
Which formats come back, and is the capture kept private?
TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, from any of 99 languages. Captures are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and removing a capture removes its transcript too.
