HDMI capture · file from PC or card · about 2 min per audio hour

Transcribe long recordings captured with an AVerMedia card whatever came in over HDMI.

An AVerMedia capture card records an HDMI source, a presenter's laptop, a camera or a console, through software such as RECentral or OBS Studio, and some models can also record to a memory card on their own. Upload the capture, up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and a 7-hour workshop is text in about 14 minutes: the first 20 minutes are free and the remaining 400 fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes.

Getting the capture off the card or computer

The card sees a picture and a sound feed. For the transcript, only the sound counts.

On the computer

RECentral and OBS save captures to the folder named in their recording settings, usually as MP4. Open those settings first if the file is hard to find.

On a memory card

Some AVerMedia models record straight to an SD card with no computer attached. A long session may be stored as several files, so check the model's manual and upload each part; every part is transcribed with chapters of its own.

Mind the bitrate

A capture at 20 Mbps is 20 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 9,000 MB an hour, about 9 GB. For a long talk, export the audio as an MP3 at 64 kbps instead: about 29 MB an hour, and the whole 7-hour day near 202 MB.

The day as one text

A workshop goes in as one file up to 10 hours on the upload page. It returns with a brief, chapters per session and the dates and figures the presenters gave, and you can ask questions of it in the chat.

Recording a long day over HDMI

A full day captured from the projector feed is easy to record and hard to use afterwards.

✗ Hours captured, nothing to read

The file is safe on a drive and nobody opens it.

  • A 9 GB hour no upload form will take
  • OpenAI's Whisper API, which takes 25 MB at most
  • A day split into card-sized pieces
  • Slides on screen, the explanation lost
  • Attendees asking for notes days later
  • Scrubbing a timeline to find the Q&A

✓ The day in text

One upload of the audio covers it.

  • Seven hours in roughly 14 minutes
  • A chapter per session
  • Each presenter named in the summary and key quotes
  • Questions from the floor, listed with answers
  • Captions for the posted recording
  • Twenty minutes free to check it first

00:04:30 Can the back row hear me? Good. Everything on these slides will also be in the handout.
02:15:10 Before lunch, one rule for the exercise: each group presents for five minutes, no more.
04:41:22 A question from the floor: does this method still work with a smaller sample?
06:52:05 Thank you for a long day. The recording and the slides go out to everyone by Friday.

FAQ

AVerMedia capture recordings: common questions.

Does WhipScribe work with RECentral or the card itself?

Not directly. WhipScribe has no integration with AVerMedia hardware or software; it transcribes the file you upload, wherever the card or the computer saved it.

How fast is a full day transcribed?

A 7-hour capture takes about 14 minutes. Time scales with length at roughly 2 minutes per audio hour, so a single 90-minute session is ready in about 3.

What will a day, or a series of them, cost?

Newcomers transcribe the opening 20 minutes free. A single 7-hour day takes 420 minutes from the $6 pack of 500 minutes. A three-day event, 1,260 minutes, sits on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, and credits never expire.

My capture is bigger than 5 GB.

Before your first pack the upload limit is 2 GB, and after it 5 GB a file. A capture larger than that should go in as audio; the MP3 of a whole day is a few hundred megabytes.

Our presenters spoke different languages.

Each recording is matched to its language automatically, among 99. A talk in one language with phrases in another is read on its main language; sessions held in different languages are best uploaded as separate files.

Where is the capture processed?

Every capture is transcribed on our own servers and is never used for training. Exports come back as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON.
