A cheap mic, a long evening

FIFINE mics are what many students, tutors and home podcasters plug in for long sessions. The microphone is simple; the transcript is where the evening becomes useful.

Where the recording is

A FIFINE USB mic records through your computer, so the session sits wherever your recording program saved or exported it. Audacity, for instance, keeps a project until you export audio; the exported MP3 or WAV is what you upload, while the project file itself will not transcribe.

Mono saves you a size headache

A 16-bit stereo WAV at 48 kHz is about 690 MB an hour, so a 3-hour class lands near 2.07 GB, well inside the 5 GB one file can be. Recorded in mono it is about half that, and a 128 kbps MP3 of the same class is near 175 MB.

Distance does more than price

Budget mics pick up a room well enough when the speaker is near. Put the mic between you and the lecturer's laptop speaker, not behind your own keyboard, and the class's speech comes through clearly. Typing noise and fans are ignored; mumbling at the back may come back partial.

Notes you can revise from

Each class returns as a brief with its thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps by topic, the names, numbers and dates the teacher said, and the questions the class answered. The chat finds the moment a formula was derived or an exam date was announced.

Long classes elsewhere

Three hours of class on Tuesday is three hours you will not replay on Sunday.

✗ The usual weekend

A folder of recordings and no time.

  • Recordings never reopened
  • Notes cut off when attention fades
  • A WAV just over the size line
  • Pausing to write every definition
  • No way to search for one term
  • Exam dates missed in the audio

✓ With the recording uploaded

Each class becomes something to read.

  • Upload the export as it is
  • Roughly 6 minutes for a 3-hour class
  • Chapters per topic
  • Dates and figures pulled out
  • Search the class in the chat
  • A whole term on one $32 pack

FAQ

FIFINE USB mic recordings, the common questions.

How long is the wait for a 3-hour class?

About 6 minutes, since each hour of audio takes roughly 2. Uploading the file over home Wi-Fi may take longer than the transcription.

What does a full semester cost?

One class alone is 180 minutes, inside the $4 pack of 300. Credits never expire, so they carry over the summer.

My WAV is just over 2 GB. What now?

A file can be up to 5 GB or 10 hours, with or without a pack. Exporting the class as MP3, or as mono WAV, brings it under 2 GB and the words are the same.

Which FIFINE model does this work with?

Any of them, because WhipScribe never talks to the microphone. Whatever the model, the recording program on your computer makes the file, and that file is what you upload. The upload box on this page takes up to 500 MB; a larger file continues on the main upload page.

The class switches between English and another language. Is that a problem?

No. 99 languages are detected automatically, and a recording that changes language is detected on its main one, with English terms inside other speech handled.

What can I download, and who hears the class?

Any of TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. The class is transcribed on our own servers and never used for training. Record a class only where your school and teacher allow it.
