Transcribe long videos from Google Photos the ones your phone backed up.
A long video backed up to Google Photos can be transcribed by downloading it from Google Photos and uploading it here, or by putting it in Google Drive and pasting the share link; a 2-hour video becomes text in about 4 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the remaining 100 minutes with 400 left.
Two ways out of Google Photos
The video is backed up. Now get the speech in it written down.
Download the video
Open the video at photos.google.com, use the three-dot menu and choose Download. Phone videos usually come down as MP4 from Android and as MOV from an iPhone; both upload as they are. In the rare case the upload turns a video down, convert it to MP3 and upload that.
Or use a Drive link
Google Photos share links are not among the links we fetch, but Google Drive links are. Upload the downloaded video to Drive, set sharing to anyone with the link, and paste that link here. Nothing then crosses your own connection a second time, which helps on a slow line.
Check the backup quality
Photos backed up in a space-saving quality are stored compressed, while original quality keeps the file as recorded. Compression rarely hurts the speech, so a compressed copy transcribes fine; it only matters if you also need the full-resolution video for editing.
What the family or class gets
A two-hour talk, ceremony or interview comes back with a brief, chapters with timestamps, the names, dates and numbers mentioned, and the questions it answers. People who spoke are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and SRT captions are ready for a shared copy.
Why long phone videos stay unwatched
Two hours of video is in the backup. The stories in it are not written anywhere.
✗ Kept as video
The recording is safe in the cloud and almost never replayed.
- A two-hour video in a camera roll
- Scrolling to find one story
- Relatives who cannot hear it clearly
- No captions for a shared copy
- Names and dates mentioned once and lost
- Nothing to print or quote
✓ Written down
One download or one Drive link gives you the words with times.
- Two hours of video, about 4 minutes
- Twenty minutes of video free
- Chapters to jump between stories
- Names, dates and places listed
- SRT or VTT captions for a shared copy
- DOCX to print or share

FAQ
Videos from Google Photos, answered.
How long does a 2-hour video take?
About 4 minutes after the upload, or after we fetch it from a Drive link. The rate is roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 45-minute video takes a minute and a half.
What will a two-hour phone video cost me?
A two-hour video uses 120 minutes. A first-time visitor gets the first 20 free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes transcribes the other 100, leaving 400. Five family videos of 90 minutes, 450 minutes, also fit that one pack.
Can I paste a Google Photos link?
Not a Photos link; paste a Google Drive link instead. Put the video into Drive, share it with anyone who has the link, and paste that. Drive folder links work too, for several videos at once.
My phone video is huge. What are the limits?
The ceiling for a single video is 10 hours or 5 GB. Uploads before a first pack go up to 2 GB, and a bigger file starts once a pack is on the account. No video needs splitting unless it runs past 10 hours.
Does it work if the people speak another language?
Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, among them Tagalog, Portuguese, Korean and Zulu. If speakers move between two languages, the recording is detected on its main one.
Are family videos kept private?
Family videos are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete the video and its transcript at any time. The words come out as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON.
