iPad · Voice Memos or class video · about 6 min for 3 h

Transcribe a long iPad recording from the same tablet you took it on.

A lecture recorded on an iPad is usually a Voice Memos M4A or a video saved to Photos, and either uploads here straight from Safari on the iPad. A three-hour class is transcribed in about 6 minutes, with the first 20 minutes free and a $6 pack of 500 minutes for the rest.

Recorded in class

The iPad on your desk already has the lecture. Now it can have the notes.

Voice Memos on the iPad

Voice Memos on an iPad saves recordings as M4A, exactly as on an iPhone. Share the memo to Files, then open this page in Safari, tap the upload box and choose it. Nothing needs converting.

A video of the class

A screen recording of an online class or a video filmed in the room is kept in Photos. Choose it from the photo library when the upload box asks. Video is larger than audio, so a long class video over 500 MB goes in from the upload page.

Back between classes

At about 2 minutes per audio hour, a 90-minute lecture is done in about 3 minutes and a three-hour lab in about 6. It is usually ready before the next class starts.

Notes built from the lecture

Chapters with timestamps follow the topics as they were taught, the brief lists the main points, and the names, dates and figures the lecturer gave are pulled out for you. The chat answers questions about the class.

Why iPad recordings sit unused

Recorded every class. Played back the night before the exam, if at all.

✗ The recording alone

A recorded class is only useful if you can find the part you need. On an iPad the audio is easy to capture and awkward to search, because neither a memo nor a video can be skimmed like text.

  • Three hours of audio and one question
  • Class videos too large to send anywhere
  • A converter app before any transcription
  • A service that stops reading at minute thirty
  • Handwritten notes with gaps in them
  • A subscription for one term

✓ The recording, transcribed

Upload once from the iPad, revise from the text.

  • M4A or video, uploaded as saved
  • Around 2 minutes for each hour of class
  • Lecturer and classmates named in the summary and key quotes
  • Chapters for every topic in the class
  • Minutes that carry over to next term
  • Word, text, caption and JSON downloads

00:01:55 We have three hours today, so we will do the theory first and the worked problems after the break.
00:44:20 This is the step most people skip. If you do not check the units here, everything after it is wrong.

FAQ

iPad recordings, answered.

How fast is an iPad recording transcribed?

Around 2 minutes for each hour of class after the upload. A three-hour class is usually back in about 6 minutes; a video takes longer to upload than an audio memo, not longer to transcribe.

What does a term of recorded classes cost?

Two three-hour classes a week for twelve weeks is 4,320 minutes, which is above the $12 pack, so the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes fits with 680 left. A single three-hour class is 180 minutes and fits the $6 pack of 500.

Will a long class video be too big?

A single upload can hold 10 hours or 5 GB. A Voice Memos M4A is small. A long class video can pass 2 GB, and a video that size starts once a pack is on the account.

Should I split a long class recording?

Only past 10 hours. Otherwise upload the whole recording so the chapter times match the original.

Does it work for classes in other languages?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically. A class in Tagalog, Japanese or Spanish needs no setting, and English mixed with Tagalog is handled in the same recording.

What can I download, and is the recording private?

Downloads include Word, text, caption and JSON downloads. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
