From a notebook page to a transcript

The lecture is in your notebook as audio. Get it out as text you can revise from.

Save the clip out of the page

In the desktop OneNote for Windows, an audio recording sits on the page as a clip; right-click it and choose Save As to write the file to a folder. Other OneNote versions handle audio differently, so if there is no Save As, check whether the clip can be opened or shared from its menu.

Check the file type

Older OneNote versions saved recordings as WMA, newer ones may use another format. Look at the extension once the file is saved; if the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first and upload that.

Respect the lecturer's rules

Record and transcribe only what the lecturer and your institution allow. Recording a class or a call needs the permission the rules and the law where you are require, so ask at the start of term if you are unsure.

A semester, worked out

Two lectures a week of 90 minutes for 13 weeks are 26 lectures, or 2,340 minutes. That is above 2,000, so the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes fits and leaves 2,660 minutes for the next term.

Why notebook audio goes unplayed

You recorded every lecture. Revision week is not long enough to replay them.

✗ Audio clips in pages

Each lecture is a clip on a page with half-finished notes around it. Finding the moment the lecturer explained the hard part means playing the clip from the start.

  • Clips you cannot search
  • Notes that stop when the slides moved on
  • Ninety minutes per lecture to replay
  • Key terms misspelled from hearing
  • Revision built from gaps
  • Recordings left in old notebooks

✓ Lectures as searchable text

Upload the saved clip and get the lecture back as chapters, a brief and a list of the terms and numbers said.

  • 90 minutes back in about 3
  • Chapters following each topic of the class
  • The lecturer named in the brief, questions credited
  • Definitions and dates listed
  • Chat with the transcript before the exam
  • DOCX to paste back into the notebook

A recorded economics lecture, as it comes back.

This sample is illustrative and was written for this page; it is not a real lecture. Lecturer and student replace the names the summary would carry.

00:02:40 Today covers supply and demand shocks. Keep the graph from last week in front of you.
00:34:18 Does the curve shift or do we move along it when the price of an input goes up?
00:34:31 The supply curve shifts. Moving along the curve is what happens when the good's own price changes.

FAQ

OneNote recordings, the usual questions.

How long does a OneNote lecture take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes for each hour of audio, so a 90-minute lecture takes about 3 minutes and a 50-minute seminar under 2.

What does one 2-hour lecture cost?

A 2-hour lecture is 120 minutes. A first-time visitor gets the first 20 minutes free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes transcribes the rest from where the preview ended, with 380 minutes remaining. Credits never expire.

Can I upload straight from OneNote?

No. There is no OneNote integration; save the clip as a file first, then upload it here. If the notebook is synced, do the saving on a computer where the clip has downloaded.

How large can a lecture file be?

Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file, and up to 2 GB before your first pack. A WMA or MP3 lecture at 64 kbps is about 28.8 MB an hour, so size is never the limit for a class.

Can the lecture be in another language?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, so a lecture in Spanish, Korean or Hebrew needs no setting, and a class that switches between English and Tagalog is handled.

Are my lectures private, and what can I download?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, so your notebook audio stays yours. Each lecture downloads as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON.
