Course videos on an Open edX site

Open edX courses are built from many short videos. Read together, they become the course notes.

Getting a course video

Open edX is software institutions run themselves, so what you see depends on the site. Where the course team has allowed video downloads, a download link usually appears beneath the player; the file is often an MP4. Many courses host their videos on YouTube, and that YouTube link can be pasted directly. WhipScribe is not an Open edX plugin or XBlock; it works on the file or link you provide.

Learners and course teams

Learners transcribe the videos the course lets them download, to study from text. Course teams transcribe their own source files to produce SRT or VTT captions and a readable transcript for every unit, which also helps learners on slow connections.

A course, counted

Eight weeks of six 12-minute videos give 48 videos and 576 minutes. That is past the 500 minutes in the $6 pack, so the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes fits, with 1,424 minutes left over. A course team with a 40-hour library, 2,400 minutes, buys the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes.

What each unit returns

Every video comes back with a brief of the unit, chapters with timestamps, the terms, figures and dates the instructor says, and the questions the unit answers. Ask the chat over a transcript where a formula was derived. Instructors are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

A course as a playlist

Forty-eight short videos are easy to watch once and hard to revise from.

✗ Videos only

Revision means replaying units.

  • Hunting across units for one explanation
  • Notes that differ from what was said
  • Captions missing on older units
  • Slow pages for learners on weak connections
  • No single text for the whole course
  • Copying formulas by pausing the video

✓ A course in text

Every unit readable and searchable.

  • YouTube-hosted units pasted as links
  • 576 minutes of units on the $12 pack
  • A brief per unit for revision
  • SRT and VTT captions for every video
  • Terms and figures listed per unit
  • DOCX notes for offline study

00:00:20 Welcome to week three. In this unit we look at why the first method breaks down for large inputs.
00:04:12 Pause here and try the exercise before you continue; the answer follows in a moment.
00:08:35 Notice that the cost doubles each time the input doubles. That is the pattern to remember.
00:11:40 The graded quiz for this week opens after the next unit and stays open for seven days.

FAQ

Open edX videos, answered.

Can I paste an Open edX course link?

Not the course page, which needs a sign-in. Paste the YouTube link when the video is hosted on YouTube, or download the file where the course allows it and upload it.

There is no download button. What now?

Then the course team has not enabled downloads for that video. Ask the course team for a file, or use the YouTube link if the video is hosted there.

How long does a course take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes per audio hour. A 12-minute unit is done in seconds; 576 minutes of units take about 19 minutes.

What does it cost?

First-time visitors get the first 20 minutes free, so a 12-minute unit transcribes in full; a longer video is previewed until a pack from $6 finishes it. A 576-minute course sits on the $12 pack and a 2,400-minute library on the $24 pack. Packs are paid once and never expire.

Is there a size or length limit?

One course video may run up to 10 hours or weigh up to 5 GB. Before the first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB, and a heavier file starts once a pack is on the account.

Exports and privacy?

Units export as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON, so captions and notes come from the same run. Course videos are transcribed on our own servers and never used for training.
