Course-site lecture files · usually MP4 or MP3 · about 2 min per audio hour

Transcribe a Sakai lecture recording from the course site to study notes.

A lecture recording posted to a Sakai course site transcribes once you download the file and upload it here, at about 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 75-minute lecture is text in about 2.5 minutes. A term of 28 such lectures is 2,100 minutes, past the $12 pack's 2,000, so it goes on the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes, and the first 20 minutes are free.

Lectures on a Sakai site

Faculty post the recording to the course site. The transcript turns it into something to revise from.

Finding the file

Instructors usually place lecture recordings in the site's Resources area or link them from a lesson page; the exact tool names depend on how your campus has set Sakai up. A file posted there downloads like any attachment, often an MP4 or MP3. Some campuses deliver recordings through a separate lecture-capture tool inside Sakai instead; those need that tool's download, if the instructor allows one. WhipScribe is not a Sakai tool or plugin.

Only recordings you may keep

Students transcribe lectures the instructor has made downloadable. Instructors can download their own recordings, transcribe them, and post the DOCX back to the site, so the whole class searches the same text.

A term, in minutes

Twice-weekly lectures of 75 minutes over 14 weeks make 28 recordings and 2,100 minutes. That passes the $12 pack's 2,000 minutes by 100, so the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes is the one, and it covers the next course too. A single month of eight lectures, 600 minutes, sits on the $12 pack. Upload each lecture on upload page.

Notes that follow the lecture

Each lecture returns with a brief of its main argument and takeaways, chapters with timestamps at each topic, the terms, names, numbers and dates said aloud, and the questions the lecture answers. The chat over the transcript finds where an exam topic was explained. Instructors and students who speak are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

A lecture as a video file

The recording is on the course site. Revising from it means scrubbing through 75 minutes.

✗ Watching it again

The lecture only plays from where you left off.

  • Notes that stop when your hand gets tired
  • An assignment date said aloud and never posted
  • Scrubbing to find one definition
  • Upload tools that reject a long file
  • Long lectures cut into pieces to fit
  • Timestamps that reset in every piece

✓ Reading it instead

The lecture as a timed document.

  • The file uploaded whole
  • A brief for each lecture
  • Chapters at every new topic
  • Dates and terms listed
  • A chat to find the explanation you need
  • DOCX to post back to the site

FAQ

Sakai lecture recordings, answered.

How long does a 75-minute lecture take?

About 2.5 minutes, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A 3-hour seminar takes about 6.

What does a term cost?

The first 20 minutes are free on a first visit: a short recording transcribes in full and a longer lecture is previewed, with a pack from $6 transcribing the rest. One 75-minute lecture fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes, a month of eight takes the $12 pack, and 28 lectures, 2,100 minutes, take the $24 pack. Credits never expire.

Can I paste a Sakai link?

No. Course-site links need your campus sign-in, so WhipScribe cannot open them. Download the file and upload it, or paste a YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive link if the lecture was shared there.

Is there a size limit?

Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Before the first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB; a heavier lecture video starts once a pack is on the account.

Can a lecture in another language be transcribed?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, and English technical terms inside a lecture in another language are kept. A lecture that switches language is detected on its main one.

Exports and privacy?

A Sakai lecture downloads as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Lectures are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
