SpeechExec · DSS or DS2, MP3 if needed

Transcribe a long Philips SpeechExec dictation and hand the typist a draft.

To transcribe a long Philips SpeechExec dictation, take the DSS or DS2 file from SpeechExec, convert it to MP3 if the upload refuses it, and upload it here; a 100-minute dictation is ready in about 3 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and five 100-minute dictations fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes exactly.

From the work list to text

The long jobs on the work list, drafted in minutes.

From the work list to a file

SpeechExec keeps dictations as files in folders it manages, and where they sit depends on how your folders were configured, so check the settings to find the one you need. Copy the file rather than moving it, so that SpeechExec's status tracking stays correct. If your dictations live in a shared network folder, ask whoever set it up before copying files out of it.

When to convert

DSS and DS2 are Philips dictation formats designed for recorders and SpeechExec. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first; some SpeechExec editions offer a conversion, and other converters read DSS too. Encrypted DS2 files must be opened with their password before conversion.

The 100-minute dictation

A long report or a set of chapters dictated in one sitting often lands around 100 minutes. That is about 3 minutes of processing and 100 minutes off the $6 pack, which leaves 400 for the next four. Upload in the box above or from the upload page.

No plugin, same workflow

WhipScribe has no integration with SpeechExec and nothing runs inside it. The typist keeps the usual work list; what changes is a draft with a brief, timestamped chapters and every figure and name said, ready to correct in DOCX. Any sentence the typist doubts can be checked against the audio at its timestamp.

The long-dictation problem

SpeechExec handles the routing; the typing still takes hours.

✗ Every word keyed

A 100-minute dictation is most of a day for a typist working from the pedal.

  • Most of a day spent typing one report
  • A DSS file nothing else opens
  • Rewinds for every dictated number
  • Long jobs pushed behind short ones
  • Spellings of names left to chance
  • No search until the document exists

✓ Edit, don't type

Convert if asked, upload, and the typist edits a draft.

  • 100 minutes of dictation in about 3
  • Five long dictations per $6 pack
  • Dictated headings become chapters
  • Names and figures listed with times
  • DOCX that opens straight in Word
  • Ten hours of dictation fits a single file

FAQ

SpeechExec dictations, the common questions.

How long does a SpeechExec dictation take?

Processing takes about 2 minutes per hour of dictated audio. A 100-minute dictation is ready in a little over 3 minutes, and a four-hour session in about 8.

How many dictations does a pack cover?

Five 100-minute dictations use exactly the 500 minutes of the $6 pack. Thirty of them a month come to 3,000 minutes, so the $24 pack of 5,000 is the one to buy.

Does the upload take DSS directly?

Not always. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first, in SpeechExec where your edition offers conversion or with another tool that reads DSS. Converted or not, the words come out the same.

What are the limits per file?

10 hours or 5 GB, whichever comes first, with 2 GB before your first pack. Dictation files are compact, so the hour limit is the one you would meet first, and a file past it is split into two.

Can I dictate in Japanese or Spanish?

Yes. The language is detected from the speech, among 99, with nothing to choose beforehand. Authors with strong regional accents need no setting either; the typist corrects any name that comes out wrong. A dictation that drops into English for a quoted title is detected on its main language, and the switch is handled.

Which exports, and where does the audio go?

SpeechExec drafts download as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. SpeechExec files sent here are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
