Studio XLR mic · long WAV · first 20 min free

Transcribe long podcast WAVs recorded on a Shure SM7B the big studio file, uploaded as it is.

A Shure SM7B is an XLR studio microphone, so the recording is the WAV your interface and DAW wrote, and a 3-hour podcast episode from it comes back as text in about 6 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, the 180 minutes fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes, and the WAV can be up to 5 GB.

Studio file to show notes

The SM7B makes broadcast-quality voice and big files. Both are fine here.

Where the WAV comes from

The SM7B plugs into an audio interface, mixer or recorder by XLR and has no USB of its own. The file is whatever your DAW or recorder saved: a session in Reaper, Audition, Logic or GarageBand, or a WAV on a recorder's card. Bounce or export the finished episode as one file before uploading.

The size of a long WAV

Uncompressed audio is bitrate times time. A mono 24-bit, 48 kHz WAV is 1,152 kbps, about 518 MB an hour, so a 3-hour episode is roughly 1.6 GB. Recorded in stereo, the same episode doubles to about 3.1 GB, which starts once a pack is on the account.

A season of long episodes

A weekly 3-hour show for 26 weeks is 4,680 minutes. That passes the $12 pack and fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes with 320 left, at $0.29 an audio hour. A single episode sits comfortably on the $6 pack.

Notes for the episode page

Each episode returns with a brief, chapters with timestamps, and the names, books, numbers and dates mentioned. Every guest is named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. Paste the chapters into the episode description and SRT files into the video version.

Studio WAVs elsewhere

The better the recording chain, the bigger the file, and the faster other tools say no.

✗ The usual friction

Broadcast sound, blocked by an upload box.

  • A 25 MB limit at the Whisper API
  • Converting a pristine WAV to fit
  • Long episodes cut into chunks
  • Chapters written by scrubbing
  • Guest names misspelled in notes
  • Video captions made separately

✓ Uploaded as exported

One WAV, one document, one set of timestamps.

  • Studio WAVs taken up to 5 GB
  • A 3-hour WAV back in about 6 minutes
  • Chapters to lift into the description
  • Guest names in summary and quotes
  • Names and titles pulled out
  • Caption files for the video cut

This sample is illustrative and was written for this page, not taken from a real podcast. Roles replace names; the timestamps show a 3-hour episode.

FAQ

Shure SM7B recordings, the common questions.

How long does a 3-hour SM7B episode take?

Close to 6 minutes, since an audio hour takes about 2. On the proof page, a 4.94-hour file was done in 372 seconds.

What does a long-running show cost?

A first visit transcribes the first 20 minutes free. One 3-hour episode uses 180 of the 500 minutes in the $6 pack. Eleven weekly 3-hour episodes are 1,980 minutes, inside the $12 pack of 2,000, and half a year of them is 4,680 minutes on the $24 pack.

My stereo WAV is past 2 GB. What happens?

Uploads up to 2 GB work before a pack; a larger file starts once a pack is on the account. The ceiling is 5 GB or 10 hours per file. Exporting the episode as mono, or as an MP3, brings the size down a long way.

Should I upload the separate tracks or the mix?

The mix. Each track holds one person, so uploading tracks separately splits the conversation and uses the minutes once per track. Export the final stereo or mono mix of the episode and send that.

Can the podcast be in Japanese or Korean?

Yes. Japanese and Korean are both among the 99 languages detected automatically. An episode that switches language partway is detected on its main language.

Which exports come back, and is the episode kept private?

The five downloads are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, so an unreleased episode stays unreleased.
