The first 20 minutes are free on a first visit; three such panels use 450 of the $6 pack's 500 minutes, and a 30-panel series, 4,500 minutes, fits the $24 pack of 5,000.

Many tracks, one transcript

The DR-701D can record a separate track for every mic. For a transcript, every voice belongs in one file.

Upload the mix, not the tracks

Depending on its settings the recorder writes separate mono files per input, a combined multichannel file, a stereo mix, or a mix of these; the manual lists the options for your firmware. Upload the stereo mix: four separate tracks of a 2.5-hour panel would spend 600 minutes instead of 150 and return four partial conversations.

No mix recorded? Make one

If only the individual tracks exist, line them up in an audio editor or your video timeline and export one file, usually WAV or MP3. Keep the levels roughly even so a quiet panellist is not lost under a loud one, and mute a mic's track while it only hears the room.

Sizes for a long panel

A 2.5-hour stereo mix at 48 kHz and 24-bit is about 2.6 GB, past the 2 GB allowed before the first pack, while an MP3 of the same mix is around 150 MB. Files over 500 MB continue on the upload page, where one file can be up to 5 GB. A session past 10 hours goes in as two files.

What a roundtable turns into

A brief with the panel's thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps for each topic, the names, figures and dates panellists gave, and the questions from the floor. Panellists are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and the chat finds the point where two of them disagreed.

Multitrack panels without a transcript

Every mic got its own clean track. Nobody got the words.

✗ The usual route

Six good tracks, no transcript.

  • Each track transcribed and paid for separately
  • Four partial conversations to stitch together
  • Multichannel files too big to upload
  • Quiet panellists lost under loud ones
  • Quotes found by soloing tracks
  • Thirty panels and no topic index

✓ With WhipScribe

One mix in, the whole panel out.

  • A stereo mix up to 5 GB
  • Two and a half hours back in about 5 minutes
  • Topics as timestamped chapters
  • Figures and dates listed for checking
  • First 20 minutes free
  • A 30-panel series on the $24 pack

Sample

A two-and-a-half-hour roundtable, mixed from four mics.

Illustrative only: written for this page, not taken from a real panel. The timestamps show a 2.5-hour session.

00:02:50 Let's go round the table once, name and where you work, and then straight into housing.
00:46:15 I'd push back on that. The waiting list doubled, but the number of homes stayed flat.
01:31:40 Can we bring the floor in? There are hands up on the left side already.
02:24:05 Last word to each of you, thirty seconds, and then we thank the hall staff.

FAQ

Tascam DR-701D recordings, answered.

How long does a 2.5-hour DR-701D panel take?

About 5 minutes, since each hour of audio takes roughly 2. A full 8-hour event day is back in about 16.

Why not upload all six tracks?

Each file is transcribed and charged on its own length, so six tracks of the same panel cost six times the minutes and come back as six separate partial texts. One mix holds every voice in one transcript.

What does a panel series cost?

Thirty 2.5-hour panels are 4,500 minutes, which fit the $24 pack of 5,000 with 500 left. Three panels fit the $6 pack of 500, and twelve (1,800 minutes) fit the $12 pack of 2,000. Packs are one-time and the minutes never expire.

The mix is over 2 GB. Will it upload?

Yes once a pack is on the account; then a file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Before the first pack, files stop at 2 GB, so buy the pack first or export the mix as MP3.

Does WhipScribe connect to the recorder?

No. There is no integration, plugin or bot with Tascam's recorders or with any camera. You copy the file off the SD card and upload it, or paste a link.

Which exports come back, and who hears the panel?

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, with 99 languages detected automatically. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
