Transcribe a Portacapture X8 recording six hours, one transcript.
Six hours recorded on a Tascam Portacapture X8 come back as text in about 12 minutes, and your first recording gets the first 20 minutes free. The X8 writes WAV to an SD card, including 32-bit float takes that can pass 5 GB on a long day, so upload the mix or a smaller export and the session uses 360 minutes of a $6 pack.
A recorder built for long sessions
Many inputs and float WAV on the card. One clear file on the page.
The mix, not the stems
The X8 can record several inputs as separate tracks on its SD card. If a stereo mix was saved alongside them, upload the mix, because every separate track is charged for the full session. Without a mix, combine the tracks in an editor and upload the result.
A six-hour float WAV by size
At 48 kHz a 32-bit float stereo mix grows by about 1.4 GB per hour, so six hours is around 8.3 GB, more than the 5 GB a file can be. Saved as 16-bit stereo it is about 4.1 GB, and as a 128 kbps MP3 about 350 MB. Either export transcribes the same.
Exporting without losing quiet voices
Float recording means a quiet panellist was not clipped and can be brought up afterwards. Normalise the mix before you export the 16-bit or MP3 copy, so the export is saved at a sensible level. The transcript is read from the speech, and the extra bit depth adds nothing to it.
Six hours you can navigate
A long session returns in chapters with timestamps, with the brief's thesis and takeaways, every name, number and date said on stage, and the questions the session answered. Moderators and panellists are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.
Why long X8 sessions go nowhere
The recording is excellent. Nobody can find anything in it.
✗ A float WAV that will not go up
Long, uncompressed takes run into size walls, and per-track uploads multiply the bill.
- An 8 GB file refused outright
- Six tracks charged as six sessions
- A long day chopped into hour pieces
- Clocks that restart for every piece
- A transcript with no chapters

Six hours in one file under 5 GB, and one transcript that follows the day.
- 360 minutes on the $6 pack
- About 12 minutes to process
- One clock for the whole day
- Panellists named in quotes
- Chapters for each session
- SRT for the conference video

FAQ
Portacapture X8 recordings, the common questions.
How long does six hours from the X8 take to transcribe?
About 12 minutes of processing, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. With a multi-gigabyte WAV, the upload is usually slower than the transcription.
What does a six-hour X8 session cost?
Six hours is 360 minutes, on the $6 pack of 500 with 140 to spare. Two conference days of six hours each are 720 minutes, which needs the $12 pack of 2,000. A first recording starts with 20 free minutes.
Will a 32-bit float file from the X8 upload?
Yes, as long as it is under 5 GB and 10 hours. Before your first pack, files up to 2 GB start at once; a larger one starts when a pack is on the account. A take over 5 GB needs a 16-bit or MP3 export first.
Should I upload every input track?
No. Each one is charged as a full-length recording, and a track with one voice gives a thinner summary than the room. Upload the stereo mix, or mix the tracks yourself and upload that.
What languages can the session be in?
99 languages are detected automatically, so a programme in Korean, Japanese, Portuguese or Swedish needs no setting. A session that switches between English and Tagalog in one recording is handled.
What formats come back, and is the recording private?
The X8 session downloads as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Your X8 audio is transcribed on our own servers and is never used for training, and you can delete it whenever you like.
