Zoom F3 · 32-bit float WAV on microSD · 5 GB per file

Transcribe a Zoom F3 recording even when the WAV is huge.

A two-hour Zoom F3 interview transcribes in about 4 minutes, and the first 20 minutes are free on your first recording. The F3 writes 32-bit float WAV to its microSD card, which runs about 1.4 GB an hour in stereo at 48 kHz, so a take over roughly 85 minutes starts once a pack from $6 is on the account.

What 32-bit float means for upload

The format that saves your levels also fills the card.

The size of a float WAV

Every sample in a 32-bit float WAV takes four bytes, twice a 16-bit file. At 48 kHz that is about 690 MB an hour per channel, so a stereo take grows by about 1.4 GB an hour. Record at 96 kHz and each of those figures doubles, which is far more than speech needs.

The two lines to know

Before a first pack, a file up to 2 GB uploads straight away; in stereo at 48 kHz that is roughly the first 85 minutes. Anything bigger, up to 5 GB, starts once a pack is on the account. A four-hour stereo take at 48 kHz is about 5.5 GB and passes even that.

When to export a smaller copy

For a take over 5 GB, open it in your editor, normalise it so a quiet voice is not saved quiet, and export a 16-bit WAV or an MP3. A 16-bit copy halves the size, and a 128 kbps MP3 of four hours is about 230 MB. Transcription accuracy does not depend on the extra bit depth.

From the card to the page

The F3 saves to a microSD card. Read the card in a card reader or connect the recorder by USB, copy the WAV to your computer, and drop it here. Files of several gigabytes go up more reliably from the upload page, and you can close the tab while it processes.

Why F3 files stall elsewhere

Most upload boxes were sized for phone memos, not float WAV.

✗ Where a big F3 take gets stuck

A clean two-hour float WAV can be refused or cut short by tools that expect a small compressed file.

  • A 25 MB API limit against a 2.8 GB file
  • Free tiers that stop at 30 minutes
  • Browser uploads that time out halfway
  • Splitting a take into 20-minute chunks
  • Timestamps that restart at every chunk
  • A plan billed monthly for one documentary

✓ One F3 take, one upload

The file goes up as recorded, or as a smaller export if it passes 5 GB, and comes back as one document.

  • Up to 5 GB in a single file
  • About 2 minutes per recorded hour
  • One clock from the first second
  • Subject and interviewer named in the brief
  • Chapters to find each topic
  • Credits that never expire

This sample is illustrative: an invented exchange, not a real interview. It shows a two-person interview recorded on a field recorder, with timestamps counted from the start of the WAV.

FAQ

Zoom F3 files, answered.

How long does a two-hour F3 recording take?

About 4 minutes of processing, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A float WAV of that length is near 2.8 GB in stereo, so the upload itself may take longer than the transcription on a home connection.

What does a two-hour F3 interview cost?

Two hours is 120 minutes, which fits on the $6 pack of 500 minutes with 380 to spare. Size does not change the price: a 2.8 GB WAV and a 115 MB MP3 of the same interview use the same minutes. On a first recording, the opening 20 minutes cost nothing.

Will a 32-bit float WAV upload as it is?

Yes, it is a WAV and goes up as one. Up to 2 GB it uploads before any pack, and up to 5 GB once a pack is on the account. A longer take needs a 16-bit or MP3 export, or a cut at a natural pause.

Should I split a long F3 take into parts?

Only if it passes 5 GB or 10 hours. Below that, one file keeps one clock and one brief for the whole conversation. If you must cut, cut at a pause so no sentence is broken across two transcripts.

What languages can the interview be in?

99 languages are detected automatically. If your subject switches between English and Tagalog mid-answer, the recording is detected on its main language and the switch is handled.

Which formats come out, and is the recording kept private?

Downloads cover TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. The F3 file is transcribed on our own servers, is never used for training, and can be deleted with its transcript whenever you choose.
