Transcribe a long Camtasia TREC file the narration, in writing.
A TREC file is Camtasia Recorder's project-style capture, so the reliable route is to export it from Camtasia as MP4 or audio and upload that, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. It transcribes at about 2 minutes per audio hour, the first 20 minutes are free, and an 8-hour training day fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes with 20 to spare.
TREC, worked out
TREC holds the screen, the camera and the microphone as separate tracks. Only the voice needs to travel.
What a TREC file is
Recent versions of TechSmith Camtasia Recorder save captures as .trec, keeping the screen, an optional webcam, the microphone and system audio as separate tracks so the editor can adjust each one. Long ones are recorded trainings, software walkthroughs, course modules, webinars captured off the screen and user research sessions.
Size per hour
A TREC grows with what happens on screen: a still slide deck compresses well, scrolling and video do not, so an hour can be a few hundred megabytes or several gigabytes. Exported, a 1080p MP4 at 2 to 4 Mbps runs about 0.9 to 1.8 GB an hour; audio at 128 kbps about 58 MB.
Export, then upload
Open the TREC in Camtasia and use its export or share option to produce a local MP4; some versions also offer an audio-only export. If the upload refuses a file, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC, should your copy open it. Files up to 500 MB go in the box here; larger ones continue on the upload page.
What comes back
A brief with the goal and takeaways, chapters at each step or module, the names, settings, numbers and dates mentioned, the questions the session answers, and a chat to find a step again. The presenter and anyone asking questions are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.
Why long screen recordings stay unwatched
Recorded for one session, then too long for anyone to scrub through.

FAQ
Long Camtasia TREC files, common questions.
Can I upload the TREC itself?
It is unlikely to be accepted, since TREC is made for Camtasia's editor. Export an MP4 or audio file from Camtasia and upload that. If the upload refuses an export, convert it to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC.
Which export should I choose?
Audio only, if your version offers it, is the smallest: an 8-hour day at 128 kbps is about 461 MB and fits the box on this page. An MP4 works just as well, up to 2 GB before a pack and 5 GB after.
How long does an 8-hour training take?
About 16 minutes, at roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. The transcript also gives you SRT captions, which many video editors can import, Camtasia among them in recent versions.
What does a recorded course cost?
Twelve modules of 35 minutes are 420 minutes, on the $6 pack of 500. A course of 40 modules at 45 minutes is 1,800 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000.
The recording ran longer than 10 hours.
Trim it in Camtasia or export it in two parts of 10 hours or less, and upload both. Each part gets its own transcript and chapters.
Languages and privacy?
Any of 99 languages, detected automatically, and English software terms inside other languages are handled. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
