Gurdwara sewadars and media volunteers · 60 to 90 minute katha

Transcribe Punjabi gurdwara katha so the sangat can read it again during the week.

A 90-minute Punjabi katha recorded at a gurdwara in Australia is transcribed in about 3 minutes, with Punjabi detected automatically and the text written in Gurmukhi. The first 20 minutes are free, and four weekly katha of 90 minutes, 360 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes.

For the gurdwara's media sewa

The katha is heard once in the darbar hall. Many in the sangat would read it again.

A first draft to refine

Punjabi output is a fast first draft; plan one review pass. Have a volunteer who reads Gurmukhi check the quoted lines of Gurbani against the source before anything is printed or posted.

Themes as chapters

Chapters follow the katha as it moves from one theme to the next, with timestamps, so a volunteer can find the explanation of seva or the history told that morning without replaying the whole recording.

Kirtan and katha in one file

When the recording carries a full programme, the sung kirtan with harmonium and tabla is music and is not transcribed; the spoken katha, the ardas recited aloud and the announcements are.

From the livestream or the desk

If the katha was streamed to YouTube, paste the link. A mixing-desk recording over 500 MB continues on the upload page; one file can run to 10 hours or 5 GB.

Why katha is hard to revisit

A katha is rich in explanation, and an hour of audio is a lot to search.

✗ Recording only

The katha is streamed or recorded, then sits on a channel where nobody can search for the passage they half remember.

  • Replaying an hour to find one explanation
  • Volunteers typing katha notes by hand
  • English-only tools for a Punjabi katha
  • Young members who read faster than they listen
  • No text for the newsletter
  • Desk recordings too large to share

✓ Recording and text

The katha comes back as Gurmukhi text with chapters, ready for a volunteer to review.

  • About 3 minutes for a 90-minute katha
  • Punjabi detected, English phrases handled
  • Kathavachak and speakers named in the summary
  • Themes as timestamped chapters
  • A chat to find a passage again
  • DOCX for the review pass

Sample output

A morning katha on seva, with a notice at the end.

Illustrative lines written for this page; no real gurdwara or kathavachak, and no Gurbani is quoted. English gloss: in today's katha we reflect on the meaning of seva; the Guru teaches us to live with humility; seva is not only in the langar but at home and at work; next Sunday the children's Punjabi class is at ten in the morning.

FAQ

Gurdwara katha recordings, answered.

How long does a katha take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes per hour of audio. A 60-minute katha takes about 2 minutes, a 90-minute katha about 3, and a 3-hour programme around 6. A volunteer can upload when the diwan ends and have text to review before langar is over.

What does it cost for a gurdwara that records every week?

Four weekly katha of 90 minutes, 360 minutes, use the $6 pack of 500. A gurpurab week of seven 2-hour programmes, 840 minutes, uses the $12 pack of 2,000. A year of weekly 90-minute katha, 4,680 minutes, fits the $24 pack of 5,000. Packs are paid once in USD, with no subscription.

Is the kirtan transcribed?

No. Sung kirtan with instruments is treated as music, and music is not transcribed. The spoken katha, the announcements and anything recited aloud come through as text.

How should we check Gurbani quotations?

Treat every quoted line as something to verify. A volunteer compares those lines with a trusted source during the review pass, then reads the surrounding explanation against the audio wherever a word looks wrong.

Can I hear how it handles our kathavachak before paying?

Yes. As a first-time visitor you get the first 20 minutes free, which is enough to judge the opening of a katha. A pack from $6 carries on from where that preview stopped.

Who sees the recording?

Only the account that uploads it. Katha recordings are transcribed on our own servers and never used for training. Downloads are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON.
