Transcribe research interviews for a whole UK study, not one at a time.

A research interview recorded in the UK usually runs 60 to 120 minutes, and WhipScribe returns a 90-minute one in about 3 minutes, with the first 20 minutes free. A study of twenty such interviews is 1,800 minutes, which sits inside a single $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, so the transcription bill for the whole project is twelve US dollars.

What a qualitative study needs

From recorder to coding, without the weeks of typing in between.

A batch, not a backlog

Fieldwork often ends with a folder of thirty files and a supervisor asking when analysis starts. Upload them one after another or share the Drive folder; each interview processes in a few minutes, so the last one is ready on the afternoon you finish collecting.

DOCX that drops into coding software

Qualitative analysis packages read Word documents, so the DOCX export is the one most researchers import. Each file keeps its timestamps, which lets you go back to the audio when a participant's tone matters to the code you assign. upload page

The study costed before you start

Twenty interviews at an average of 90 minutes add up to 1,800 minutes. The $12 pack holds 2,000, leaving about three hours for a pilot or a follow-up. At $0.36 an audio hour it is easy to put in a grant budget line, and the minutes do not run out at the end of a term.

An overview of every participant's interview

Every transcript arrives with a brief of the main points, chapters with times, and the questions the conversation answered. It is not your analysis, but it shows at a glance which interviews talked about the theme you are chasing.

Where interview transcription stalls

Typing an interview takes four to six times its length.

✗ Typing, outsourcing or free tiers

A doctoral student who types their own interviews spends most of a month on it, and short free tiers cut each file off well before the interview ends.

  • Six hours of typing for each 90-minute file
  • Free tiers that end at 30 minutes
  • Per-minute agency rates that outgrow a student budget
  • Waiting days for a returned batch
  • Files split to fit a 25 MB upload limit
  • No timestamps to check a quotation

✓ One upload per interview

Each recording goes in whole and comes back as a timestamped document you can code the same day.

  • About 3 minutes per 90-minute interview
  • First 20 minutes free on your own recording
  • A full study on one $12 pack
  • DOCX ready for your coding software
  • Brief, chapters and quotes per interview
  • Credits that never expire between waves

00:03:10 Can you tell me about the first time you used the service after you moved here?
00:03:24 It was about six weeks in. I didn't know you had to register first, so I turned up and was sent away.
00:41:52 You mentioned trust earlier. What would have changed that for you?
00:42:15 Someone ringing back when they said they would. That was all, honestly.
01:27:40 That's everything on my list. Is there anything you expected me to ask that I didn't?

FAQ

Research interviews, the questions supervisors and ethics forms raise.

How long does a research interview take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes for each hour of audio, so a 60-minute interview is usually back in 2 minutes and a 2-hour one in about 4. You can leave the page while it runs; the transcript waits in your Library.

What does a full study of interviews cost?

Add up the minutes and pick the pack that holds them. A single 90-minute interview fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes. Twenty interviews of 90 minutes is 1,800 minutes, which fits the $12 pack of 2,000. A larger study of forty interviews needs the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes. Each pack is one payment, and the first 20 minutes of your first recording are free.

My recorder made large WAV files. Will they upload?

Yes. A 90-minute WAV is usually under 1 GB, well inside the 2 GB allowed before a pack and the 5 GB per file after one. Each file can run up to 10 hours, so no interview needs splitting.

Some participants spoke another language. Does that work?

99 languages are detected automatically, so an interview conducted in Welsh, Polish, Urdu or Spanish needs no setting. If a participant moves between two languages, the transcript follows the main one.

Is this suitable for interviews covered by an ethics approval?

Check what your approval says about third-party processing. What we can tell you is factual: Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. You can delete each recording and its transcript yourself, at any time.

Which files can I export for analysis?

DOCX for coding software and for appendices, TXT for plain text, JSON if you analyse with scripts, and SRT or VTT if a clip is shown with captions in a presentation.
