Google Meet · about 8 h per recording · Drive link

How long can a Google Meet recording be? about eight hours, then into Drive.

Google's help pages have put the ceiling at about 8 hours per Google Meet recording, which is saved as an MP4 in the organiser's Drive, and recording itself is only offered on certain Workspace plans. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. Your recording starts with a free preview of its opening minutes.

From Meet to text

Where the recording goes and how it reaches us.

The eight-hour line

When a Meet recording reaches Google's limit it stops, even if the meeting carries on, and a new recording has to be started for the rest. Google adjusts Meet's features by plan and over time, so treat the figure as current guidance rather than a promise.

Find it in Drive

Recordings usually land in a Meet Recordings folder in the organiser's My Drive, and a link is often posted to the calendar event and emailed to the organiser. Whoever holds the file can share it with a link.

Paste the link, skip the download

A Google Drive share link goes straight in, so a multi-gigabyte MP4 never has to touch your laptop. Whole Drive folders of recordings work too. If you prefer to upload, this box takes 500 MB and bigger files continue on the upload page.

What you get back

A brief with the thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps across all eight hours, the names, numbers and dates said, and a chat to ask about any agenda item. Participants are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

Long Meet calls

Eight hours of Meet is a lot to rewatch.

FAQ

Google Meet recordings, answered.

Can I record a Meet call on a free Google account?

Recording has generally been tied to particular Google Workspace editions rather than free personal accounts, and free group calls have had a time limit of their own. Check Google's current plan comparison before you count on it.

Does the Drive link need special sharing settings?

The link has to open for someone outside your organisation, so set the file to be viewable by anyone with the link, at least while it transcribes. You can tighten the sharing again afterwards.

How big is an 8-hour Meet recording?

Usually well over a gigabyte and sometimes past 2 GB, depending on what was on screen. With a Drive link the size does not matter to you; a direct upload can be up to 5 GB, with or without a pack.

What if the meeting needed two recordings?

Transcribe each part as its own file; the minutes are the same either way. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.

Do I need consent to record?

Recording a call needs the consent the law where you and the participants are requires. Meet tells participants when recording starts, and saying so at the start removes any doubt. No bot joins; we only see the recording.

Where does the transcription happen?

On our own servers; recordings are never used for training. Twenty 90-minute Meet sessions a month come to 1,800 minutes, inside the $18 pack (3,000 minutes), with credits that never expire.
