Transcribe a French church service the homily in writing by Sunday afternoon.

A French-language mass or Sunday service in Canada runs 60 to 120 minutes, and a 90-minute service comes back here as French text in about 3 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and four 90-minute services, 360 minutes, fit on the $6 pack of 500 minutes.

What the service becomes

The homily in French, ready to share with those who could not attend.

From the stream or the recorder

If the parish streams to YouTube, paste the replay link. A recording from the sound desk or a phone uploads on upload page, and a Facebook replay is downloaded first, then uploaded.

Speech, not music

The homily, the readings, the prayers spoken aloud and the announcements are transcribed. Hymns, organ music and sung or chanted parts are not, so the text reads as the spoken service.

Chapters from welcome to dismissal

Chapters follow the service as it moves on, each with its start time, so the homily can be found by its minute without scrolling through the whole celebration.

A homily to reread

The brief draws out the homily's main points and the scripture passages quoted. That is a start for a bulletin note, a study group or a printed copy for parishioners at home. Volunteers who prepare the bulletin can copy a paragraph from the DOCX instead of typing it from a recording.

Why services are hard to share

A ninety-minute video is not how most people want to revisit a homily.

✗ Sharing only the recording

Few people replay an hour and a half to hear ten minutes.

  • The homily buried in the full video
  • No text for those hard of hearing
  • Homily notes written from memory
  • English-first transcription
  • Music mixed into the text
  • A subscription for one service a week

✓ Sharing the text

The spoken service as French text, by chapter.

  • Ninety minutes of messe in about 3 minutes
  • Homily and readings transcribed
  • Chant and organ left out
  • Celebrant named in the brief
  • Scripture references listed
  • Minutes that roll over

FAQ

French church services, the common questions.

How long does a 90-minute messe take?

About 3 minutes, and a 2-hour celebration about 4, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. Stretches that are only music pass through without text. A weekday mass of 30 minutes takes about one minute.

What does a year of French Sunday services cost?

Four 90-minute services, 360 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes. A year of weekly 75-minute services, 3,900 minutes, fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes. Credits never expire, so one pack can last the season.

Are the hymns and chants transcribed?

No. Music, singing and chanted parts are not transcribed; the spoken homily, readings, prayers and announcements are. A service with long musical stretches simply has fewer lines.

What about a bilingual parish?

French and English are both detected automatically among 99 languages. A service that moves between the two is detected on its main language, with the switches handled. Parishes that alternate a French mass and an English mass on the same Sunday can send each recording as its own file.

Is the file size a problem?

Rarely: a 90-minute service as 128 kbps audio is about 86 MB (128,000 bits × 5,400 seconds ÷ 8). Video is larger; uploads go up to 2 GB before a first pack and 5 GB with one, and a service never needs splitting below 10 hours. A phone placed near the ambo or the speaker records the homily clearly enough for most purposes; the sound desk feed is cleaner still.

Which files come back, and is it private?

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Services are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
