Transcribe a Canvas Studio lecture out of the course and into notes.
A Canvas Studio lecture downloaded as an MP4 is transcribed in about 2.5 minutes for 75 minutes of teaching, and in about 6 for a 3-hour seminar. The first 20 minutes are free, and 28 lectures of 75 minutes (2,100 minutes) sit on the $24 pack because they are just over the $12 pack's 2,000. WhipScribe is not a Canvas app; it transcribes the video file you are allowed to download from Studio.
Canvas Studio to text
The lecture is embedded in the course. Its words can leave with you.
Where the file is
Lectures embedded in Canvas pages usually live in Canvas Studio, and the video itself is an MP4 stored there. The owner can download it from the media's details in Studio, and students can when the owner has allowed it. If you only see the embedded player, ask the lecturer.
Downloads follow the lecturer
A student transcribes the Studio lectures the lecturer has allowed them to download. Lecturers who want the whole class to have notes can download their own Studio media, transcribe it and post the DOCX in the course. Posting the transcript also gives students who read faster than they listen a way through the week's material.
Just over a pack boundary
Twenty-eight lectures of 75 minutes come to 2,100 minutes, a hundred more than the $12 pack holds, so the $24 pack of 5,000 is the right buy. Twenty-six lectures, 1,950 minutes, would stay on the $12 pack. Count before you buy.
Notes that match the video
Upload on upload page and timestamps in the transcript match the Studio player, so a note that says 00:42:10 takes anyone straight to that point. The brief, chapters and key terms come with every lecture.
What embedded video does not do
A lecture embedded in a module page is easy to play and hard to study from.
✗ Studying from the player
The embedded player is built for watching, not for revising.
- Hunting through a 75-minute video for one example
- Captions you cannot take outside the course
- 25 MB as the Whisper API's per-file maximum
- Splitting a 3-hour seminar video
- Timestamps that no longer match the player
- No list of readings or deadlines said aloud
✓ Studying from the transcript
The lecture as a document that sits next to your notes.
- One MP4, one upload
- A brief for the week's lecture
- Chapters that follow the slides
- Readings and dates listed
- A chat for checking a definition
- DOCX to annotate, SRT for captions

FAQ
Canvas Studio lectures, answered.
How long does a 75-minute Canvas Studio lecture take?
About 2.5 minutes, since an hour of audio takes about 2. A 3-hour seminar video is ready in about 6. Every transcript stays in your Library, ready for the week before the exam.
What does a term of Studio lectures cost?
Twenty-eight 75-minute lectures are 2,100 minutes and need the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes; twenty-six lectures, 1,950 minutes, fit the $12 pack of 2,000. One lecture uses 75 minutes of the $6 pack. On a first visit, the first 20 minutes are free and a pack carries on from where the preview ended.
Can I paste the Canvas page link?
No. Canvas and Studio links are not among the links WhipScribe opens. Download the MP4 from Studio, or paste a YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive link if the lecturer has shared the lecture there.
How big can the Studio MP4 be?
A Studio MP4 may be up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Accounts without a pack can upload files up to 2 GB; a larger file starts once a pack is on the account. Most 75-minute lecture videos are well under the 2 GB line.
Which languages are covered?
99 languages, detected automatically, including Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Swedish. A lecture that switches language is detected on its main one, and the switches are handled. Lecturers who quote a passage in another language mid-lecture get it transcribed as spoken.
Exports and privacy?
Studio lectures export to TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON from one transcript. Speakers are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters of each lecture. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
