Capture, download, read

Capture records the lecture in a browser tab. The transcript is how students revisit it.

Where Capture saves the session

Panopto Capture runs in the browser and saves each recording as a session in your Panopto library, in the folder you picked before pressing record, often your personal folder. From there it can be moved to a course folder like any other session.

Getting a file out

Whether a session can be downloaded depends on how your institution set up Panopto and on the folder's settings. When downloads are on, the session's options usually include one, typically an MP4. When they are off, the person who recorded the session or an admin can switch them on or export a copy.

A module of lectures, added up

Twelve lectures of 110 minutes are 1,320 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes with 680 left. A one-off 150-minute guest lecture uses 150 of the 500 minutes in the $6 pack. A whole year of weekly modules above 2,000 minutes belongs on the $24 pack of 5,000.

Long lectures stay in one piece

A browser recording of a long seminar can run three or four hours with breaks left in. Upload it as one file, up to 10 hours, and the transcript keeps a single clock, so a timestamp in the notes points straight at the right minute in the session. Files over 2 GB start once a pack is on the account.

Studying from a captured lecture

A browser recording is easy to make and slow to revise from.

✗ From the player

The lecture is saved, but only the player can search it.

  • Pausing every few minutes to take notes
  • Slide changes with no written summary
  • Tools that refuse a file longer than a clip
  • A 25 MB upload limit on the Whisper API
  • No list of the questions the lecture answered
  • Notes that drift from the recording's clock

✓ From the transcript

The full lecture as text, timed to the session.

  • One upload for the full lecture
  • About 5 minutes for 150 minutes
  • Chapters for each topic on the slides
  • Formulas and figures said aloud, listed
  • A chat that answers from the lecture
  • Captions to add back to the session

00:03:30 I'm recording this in the browser, so the screen and my camera are both in the session.
00:38:14 Here is the derivation step most people skip; write out every line of it.
01:12:02 Let's take a ten-minute break; the recording keeps running, so skip ahead if you're watching later.
01:47:50 This case study comes up again in the final, so note the three causes.
02:28:41 Reading for next week is chapters seven and eight.

FAQ

Panopto Capture recordings, answered.

Can WhipScribe open my Panopto session directly?

No. There is no Panopto integration and no sign-in to your institution's site. Download the session as a file, or ask whoever owns it for a copy, and upload that. If a lecture was recorded in two sessions because the browser tab closed, upload both; each gets its own chapters.

How long does a long lecture take?

Close to 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 150-minute lecture takes about 5 minutes. The proof page lists a 9.31-hour run that took 1,033 seconds.

What will a module cost?

Twelve 110-minute lectures, 1,320 minutes, fit the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes. One lecture fits the $6 pack of 500. A first visit gets the first 20 minutes free, and the pack then transcribes the rest.

The download option is missing. What now?

Downloads are a setting your institution or the folder owner controls. Ask the lecturer or the Panopto admin; if the lecture was also posted to YouTube or shared from Google Drive with a public link, paste that link instead.

Does the lecturer's screen recording matter?

No. Only the speech is transcribed; the slides and screen are not read. A lecture that includes a video clip with music keeps the spoken parts and leaves out the music.

Which languages and files come back?

Any of 99 languages, detected automatically. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Lectures are transcribed on our own servers and never used for training.
