Screen session to text

ShareX records the screen. What makes a long session worth keeping is what was said while it ran.

Check the audio first

A screen recording only has speech if an audio source was selected before recording; check the screen recorder options in ShareX for the microphone or system audio. A recording with no sound has nothing to transcribe. If someone else is on the call, recording it needs the consent the law where you are requires.

Find the file

ShareX saves recordings to its screenshots folder, which is usually inside Documents unless you changed it in the settings, and the output is usually an MP4 written through FFmpeg. Mostly static screens compress well, so a long session is often smaller than camera video of the same length. If a recording stopped and restarted during the day, upload each file; every part gets its own transcript and timestamps.

A run of long sessions

Twelve working sessions of 3 hours are 2,160 minutes, just past the $12 pack, so the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes covers them with 2,840 left. A single 6.5-hour session fits the $6 pack.

What comes back

A brief with the takeaways, chapters with timestamps for each stretch of work, and the names, numbers and dates said aloud. The chat over the transcript finds the moment a decision was made, and DOCX gives you a document to tidy into a how-to guide. Recordings over 500 MB go on the upload page, up to 5 GB.

Long screen recordings

  • Decisions lost in the middle
  • Notes written after the fact
  • Silent recordings found too late

00:08:33 Okay, recording. I am going to walk through the setup from a clean machine so we have it documented.
01:47:21 This error again. It means the config file is in the wrong folder, not that the install failed.
04:02:46 Let me pause the build and explain why we changed the order of these two steps.
06:21:09 That is the whole process. I will stop the recording here and share the file with the team.

FAQ

ShareX recordings, answered.

How long does a 6.5-hour ShareX recording take?

About 13 minutes, since transcription runs at roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. A 3-hour session takes about 6 minutes.

What will a run of sessions cost?

On a first visit the first 20 minutes are free, and a longer session is previewed until a pack transcribes the rest. One 6.5-hour session is 390 minutes of the $6 pack. Twelve 3-hour sessions fit the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes.

How big can the recording be?

Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Before the first pack, files up to 2 GB start right away, and a larger one starts once a pack is on the account. A session over 10 hours goes up as two files.

Is WhipScribe built into ShareX?

No. There is no ShareX integration, plugin or upload destination for WhipScribe. You record, find the file and upload it.

Can the session be in German or Japanese?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, and English technical terms inside the speech are kept.

What can I export, and where is the session processed?

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON are all included. Screen recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. A team that records every week can use the $19 a month Workspace.
