Your own class footage · usually MP4 or MOV · about 2 min per audio hour

Transcribe the class recordings for your Skillshare class raw footage to lesson plan, project guide and captions.

Four hours of raw footage a teacher recorded for a Skillshare class become text in about 8 minutes once uploaded, and the first 20 minutes are free. That footage uses 240 of the 500 minutes in the $6 pack, and WhipScribe has no connection to Skillshare: it works on the recordings on your own drive.

Before the edit, and after it

A 75-minute class often starts as four hours of footage. Text makes that footage easy to cut.

Use your own recordings

This is for the footage you recorded for your class: camera files, often MP4 or MOV, and screen recordings from your capture tool. Upload them from your drive; nothing is taken from the Skillshare site.

Edit from the transcript

Transcribe the raw takes to find your best explanation of each step, then cut. Chapters with timestamps show where each topic starts. After the edit, transcribe the finished lessons again if you want captions that line up. One file can be 10 hours or 5 GB; before a pack, uploads stop at 2 GB.

A class, or a year of them

Four hours of raw footage for one class is 240 minutes on the $6 pack of 500. Releasing a class every month with 3 hours of footage each is 2,160 minutes over a year, past the $12 pack, so it sits on the $24 pack of 5,000.

What you write from it

Every recording returns with a brief of the thesis and takeaways, chapters, and the names, numbers and dates you mentioned. Turn it into the class description, the project guide and lesson titles, and use the chat to list the questions a lesson answers.

Editing from video alone

Finding your best take in four hours of footage means watching four hours of footage.

00:06:10 Okay, take two. In this lesson we'll mix the base colour before we touch the paper.
01:12:35 That didn't work, let me try the wash again with more water on the brush.
02:40:20 For your class project, paint one small scene using only three colours.

FAQ

Skillshare class recordings: questions teachers ask.

How long will four hours of footage take?

About 8 minutes, since processing runs at roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. A finished 75-minute class takes about 2 and a half minutes.

What does a class, or a year of classes, cost?

The opening 20 minutes of a first upload are free. One class with 4 hours of raw footage is 240 minutes on the $6 pack of 500 minutes; a class a month with 3 hours of footage each, 2,160 minutes a year, fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes. Credits never expire, so they carry from class to class.

Can I transcribe another teacher's class?

No. Upload only footage you recorded yourself, or have the rights to; this page is for teachers working on their own classes.

My footage has background music. Is that transcribed?

No. Music and sound effects are not transcribed, only your speech. Recording voice-over without music makes the transcript cleaner.

Will captions line up after I edit?

Captions follow the timestamps of the file you upload, so transcribe each finished lesson for captions, and use the raw-footage transcript only for editing.

Which exports come back, and is the footage private?

Footage transcripts export as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Footage is transcribed on our own servers and is never used to train a model, and you can delete a file and its transcript whenever you choose.
