Video file size calculator

Duration and resolution in, file size out, with the size of the audio track on its own. The bitrate behind every figure is shown.

hours · minutes
—
Sizes use 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB = 1,000 MB. File size = (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × seconds ÷ 8, with audio at 128 kbps AAC. Encoders vary the bitrate with the picture, so a real file can differ from these estimates. The meeting-recording figure is measured on production, 30 days to 2026-10-16: the median MP4 uploaded to WhipScribe came to 192 MB per hour.

The audio track is the same size whatever the picture is. That is why a two-hour 1080p video that is too big to upload has an audio track of about 115 MB.

What this means for transcription

You do not need to compress or split a video for WhipScribe. One file up to 10 hours or 5 GB uploads as it is and starts transcribing with or without a pack. Above 5 GB, paste a link if the video is on YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch or Kick, Google Drive or a podcast feed, or export the audio track and upload that. Most video editors export audio on its own. For an MP4 or MOV with AAC sound, ffmpeg copies the track out in seconds without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vn -c:a copy audio.m4a

For the time and cost of a specific recording, use the large recording calculator. There is more on transcribing large files and on transcription for long recordings. The opening minutes are a free preview; packs are $4 for 500 minutes, $12 for 2,000 minutes and $24 for 5,000 minutes, and credits never expire.

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
