Microsoft Stream · Teams recordings in OneDrive and SharePoint

Transcribe a Microsoft Stream video to text.

Stream is now the player for video stored in OneDrive and SharePoint, so a Stream video is an MP4 file in someone's library. Download it, or share it as an Anyone-with-the-link link and paste that here: the transcript comes back with timestamps, chapters, a summary and caption files.

The file you have

Where a Stream video actually lives.

Format
MP4. Teams meeting recordings and videos uploaded to Stream are ordinary MP4 files in OneDrive or SharePoint.
Where it lands
Meetings and calls: the Recordings folder in the organizer's OneDrive (or the person who pressed Record, for a call). Channel meetings: the team's SharePoint site, Documents → Recordings.
Typical size
Microsoft plans storage at about 400 MB for a one-hour meeting recording.
Who can download
The owner, and for meetings the organizer and co-organizers. Other attendees from the same organisation get view-only access without a Download button, and an admin can block downloads entirely.

Sometimes a link works. A OneDrive or SharePoint share set to Anyone with the link can be pasted in the box: we turn it into the file and fetch it. A link limited to people in your organisation is refused before anything is queued, with the fix spelled out, because no outside tool can open it. A web.microsoftstream.com address from the retired Stream (Classic) does not work; open the video in OneDrive or SharePoint instead.

How it works

Three steps, the first one is the only one that takes any thought.

1

Find the file

In Stream or OneDrive open My files → Recordings (or the channel's SharePoint Documents → Recordings) and select the video.

2

Download it, or share it publicly

Choose Download to save the MP4, then drop it in the box. Or choose Share → Anyone with the link, copy the link and paste it.

3

Read, then export

The summary and a preview are free. A pack opens the full transcript with TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON exports.

Good to know

What trips people up, and what to do about it.

Example. A 75-minute all-hands recorded in a Teams channel lands in the team's SharePoint Recordings folder as an MP4 of roughly 500 MB. Downloaded and dropped here, it comes back as a timestamped transcript with chapters for each agenda item and an SRT that can be added to the video for people who missed it.

What comes back

More than a wall of text.

The same four things for every Microsoft Stream recording, whatever its length.

A transcript with timestamps

Every line carries its time. Click a line to hear that second again, or search a name or phrase and jump to each place it was said.

A summary, chapters and key quotes

A brief with the takeaways, chapters with their start times, and the quotes worth keeping. Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

Questions answered from the recording

Ask where a topic came up or what was decided, and get the answer with the time it was said, instead of scrolling the whole text.

Every export

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT, JSON from the same transcript: a document to edit, caption files for video, plain text to paste, structured data for your own tools.

Pricing

Free preview. Packs from $6, and the minutes never expire.

A 75-minute all-hands meeting is 75 minutes, so the $6 pack (500 minutes) covers it 6 times over. Every recording gets a free preview and a summary you can read before paying; a pack opens the full transcript and every export. Packs are one-time purchases with no subscription and no seat fee.

Pick a pack to open secure checkout. Workspace is $19 a month for unlimited transcription (300-hour fair-use mark). Full pricing

What we measured, last 30 days

2,547 recordings, 1,244 audio hours, 66 languages detected. An hour of audio came back in 3.5 minutes for half of the recordings and within 18.0 minutes for nine in ten, measured from the moment the file landed to the finished transcript. Refreshed 2026-10-07; method on how we test.

FAQ

Microsoft Stream to text, answered.

How do I get a transcript of a Microsoft Stream video?

Open the video in Stream, OneDrive or SharePoint, download the MP4 and drop it in the box on this page, or share it as Anyone with the link and paste the link. The transcript comes back with timestamps, a summary and SRT and VTT caption files.

Why can I not download a Teams recording from Stream?

Teams gives the organizer, co-organizers and the person who recorded a call full access; other attendees from the same organisation can watch but not download. An admin can also block downloads. Ask the owner for the file or for a share link.

Can I paste a Stream or SharePoint link instead of downloading?

Yes, if it is shared as Anyone with the link: we convert it into the file and transcribe that. A link that only opens for people signed in to your organisation is refused with instructions, because no outside service can read it.

Does the Teams transcript come with the downloaded video?

No. The Teams transcript and captions are stored separately from the MP4 and exist only if transcription was on during the meeting. Uploading the MP4 here produces a new transcript from the audio, whatever the meeting settings were.

What does transcribing Microsoft Stream recordings cost?

The preview and the summary are free. A pack opens the full transcript: $6 for 500 minutes, $8 for 1,000 minutes, $12 for 2,000 minutes, $24 for 5,000 minutes. Packs are one-time, credits never expire, and Workspace is $19 a month if you transcribe every week.

How long can the recording be?

One file can run up to 10 hours or 5 GB. The box on this page takes files up to 500 MB; a larger file continues on the main upload page, which uploads it in parts. Most recordings come back in about two minutes per hour of audio.

Is the recording kept private?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. You can delete a recording and its transcript at any time.
