Quick answers
The five questions people ask before the first upload.
- What does WhipScribe do for documentary interview recordings?
- Import the crew's rushes folder from Google Drive, shoot days and camera subfolders included. Every clip comes back as a timestamped transcript for the paper edit, with DOCX and SRT downloads.
- How much does it cost?
- The summary of any recording is free to read; a pack from $6 (500 minutes) opens the full transcript. Credit packs: $6 = 500 min · $8 = 1,000 min · $12 = 2,000 min · $24 = 5,000 min; credits never expire and there is no seat fee. Workspace is $19 a month for unlimited transcription (300-hour fair-use mark; 100 GB of storage included, then $3 per extra 100 GB a month).
- How long does a transcript take?
- A one-hour recording is usually ready in about two minutes; most files finish in under a minute. Files up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file.
- Is it private?
- Yes. Transcribed on our own servers; audio is never sent to a third-party AI service. Never used to train, fine-tune or evaluate any model. Delete a recording and its transcript at any time; account deletion removes every record tied to the email.
- Which languages and files does it accept?
- 99+ languages, detected automatically; the transcript stays in the recording's language. Input: any audio or video file (MP3, MP4, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, WEBM, MOV, GSM and more), a YouTube, podcast, RSS, Google Drive, Twitch or Kick link, or a microphone recording. Export: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT, JSON.

What matters when transcribing documentary interview recordings?
The rushes folder, structure intact
Choose Add content → Google Drive in the Library and tick the rushes folder. Subfolders such as Day 1, Day 2, A-cam and B-cam are walked however deep they go, and the Library keeps the same structure: Drive folder in, matching folder of transcripts out. Each clip becomes its own recording under its own file name, so C0042.MP4 stays C0042.MP4.
Only the media is imported
Shot lists, release forms, stills and PDFs in the same folder are left alone. A file counts when Drive tags it as audio or video or its extension is one of mp4, mov, mkv, avi, wmv, mpg, mpeg, webm, wav, m4a, mp3, aac, flac, opus or ogg. The review step shows the file count, folders and total size before anything is billed.
Built for a paper edit
Every line carries a timestamp from the start of the clip, so a pulled quote leads straight back to its moment. Download DOCX for the producer to mark up, TXT for the edit script, or JSON with word timing for your own tools. Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters; the brief per clip shows where each topic was covered.
Big camera files and long days
Camera originals can be large. The per-file size limit applies to Drive files too, so for originals past it, put an audio-only or proxy copy in the folder and import that. A day of rushes can be dozens of clips; Workspace accounts run a set number at once and hold the rest, starting each file as a slot frees, never refusing it.
How it works
How do I transcribe a documentary interview recording?
Connect Google Drive
In the Library, Add content → Google Drive. Google asks you to allow read-only access to your Drive.
Pick files or folders
Tick single files or whole folders, subfolders included. Run it again later and the files already done are skipped.
Read, then send it back
Each file gets a transcript and the Intelligence brief. Save to Drive writes TXT and SRT into a new Drive folder.

Interview rushes — a retired ferry captain on the last winter crossing
Brief overview
The captain describes the final winter crossing before the bridge opened, and the strongest material is the storm night and the crew's farewell.
- The storm night begins at 12:05 and runs for nine minutes, the most usable continuous story in the clip.
- A short, clean line about the last horn signal at 31:40 works as an opening or closing beat.
- From 39:00 the captain repeats earlier material; the pick-up at 43:20 is the better take.
Questions this recording answers
- Where is the best opening line?
- At 31:40, the single sentence about the last horn signal; it is clean and stands alone.
- Which take of the farewell story is stronger?
- The pick-up at 43:20, which is shorter and does not restart mid-sentence.
Chapters
- Slate and early years at sea
- The storm night
- The last horn
- Repeats and the pick-up take

Questions
What else do people ask about documentary interview transcription?
Which video formats can be imported from Drive?
Any file Drive marks as audio or video, plus these extensions: mp4, mov, mkv, avi, wmv, mpg, mpeg, webm, and the common audio formats. Everything else in the folder, such as documents and pictures, is skipped rather than failed.
Can I paste the Drive link of the rushes folder instead of connecting?
No. Only single-file links work when pasted, and only when the file is shared as Anyone with the link. A folder needs the signed-in import: Library → Add content → Google Drive.
Do the transcripts land next to the clips in Drive?
They land in the Library, in folders that mirror the Drive folders. If you want them in Drive, Export to Google Drive writes a TXT and an SRT for each finished transcript into a new Drive folder; it does not write into the rushes folder.
