Quick answers
The five questions people ask before the first upload.
- What does WhipScribe do for Google Drive interview recordings?
- Connect Google Drive from your Library, pick the folder your phone or recorder synced the interviews into, and each file comes back as its own transcript with timestamps, filed in a Library folder with the same name.
- How much does it cost?
- The summary of any recording is free to read; a pack from $6 (500 minutes) opens the full transcript. Credit packs: $6 = 500 min · $8 = 1,000 min · $12 = 2,000 min · $24 = 5,000 min; credits never expire and there is no seat fee. Workspace is $19 a month for unlimited transcription (300-hour fair-use mark; 100 GB of storage included, then $3 per extra 100 GB a month).
- How long does a transcript take?
- A one-hour recording is usually ready in about two minutes; most files finish in under a minute. Files up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file.
- Is it private?
- Yes. Transcribed on our own servers; audio is never sent to a third-party AI service. Never used to train, fine-tune or evaluate any model. Delete a recording and its transcript at any time; account deletion removes every record tied to the email.
- Which languages and files does it accept?
- 99+ languages, detected automatically; the transcript stays in the recording's language. Input: any audio or video file (MP3, MP4, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, WEBM, MOV, GSM and more), a YouTube, podcast, RSS, Google Drive, Twitch or Kick link, or a microphone recording. Export: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT, JSON.

Built for Google Drive interviews
What matters when transcribing Google Drive interview recordings?
The folder, not forty uploads
In the Library choose Add content → Google Drive, connect the account the interviews live in, and tick the interview folder. Before anything starts, the review step counts the audio files it found, the folders they sit in, the total size, and any already transcribed. Each interview becomes its own recording under its own file name, such as P07_followup.m4a.
Your study structure, kept
Sorted by site, wave or cohort? Subfolders are included by default and keep their structure, so a Drive folder with Wave 1 and Wave 2 inside comes back as a Library folder with the same two subfolders of transcripts. Consent forms, PDFs and field-note Docs in the same folder are skipped; only audio and video are imported.
Ready for coding software
Download each transcript as DOCX or TXT for NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA or a plain spreadsheet, or JSON when you script your own analysis. Every line carries its timestamp, so a coded excerpt can be checked against the audio at the exact second.
Ask the whole study a question
Open the folder and use Ask this folder: "Where do participants talk about childcare costs?" The answer is drawn from up to three interviews that mention it, each cited by recording and moment, so you can play the passage before quoting it. Subfolders are asked separately.
How it works
How do I transcribe a Google Drive interview recording?
Connect Google Drive
In the Library, Add content → Google Drive. Google asks you to allow read-only access to your Drive.
Pick files or folders
Tick single files or whole folders, subfolders included. Run it again later and the files already done are skipped.
Read, then send it back
Each file gets a transcript and the Intelligence brief. Save to Drive writes TXT and SRT into a new Drive folder.
Intelligence
What comes back from a Google Drive interview recording?
Participant 07, follow-up interview — returning to work after parental leave
Brief overview
The participant returned to work full-time because flexible hours were refused, and childcare cost is the reason she gives for considering leaving.
- A request for a four-day week was turned down by her line manager, described at 12:40.
- Childcare costs take more than a third of take-home pay, the figure she gives at 27:15.
- She would stay if a hybrid pattern were offered; the condition is stated at 49:05.
Questions this recording answers
- Why did the participant return full-time?
- Her request for a four-day week was refused, so full-time was the only option offered.
- What would change her plans?
- A hybrid working pattern, which she names as the condition for staying at 49:05.
Chapters
- Consent and background
- The return-to-work conversation
- Childcare and money
- What would make her stay

Questions
What else do people ask about Google Drive interview transcription?
Can I transcribe interviews without making the Drive folder public?
Yes. Signed in, use Library → Add content → Google Drive. The connection reads your Drive directly, so no file needs a public link. Pasting a link only works for a single file shared as "Anyone with the link"; a private file is refused before anything is charged, with help at /answers/transcribe-a-google-drive-file-without-making-it-public.
What does WhipScribe get access to in my Drive?
Google asks you to allow read-only access to your Drive. WhipScribe imports only the files and folders you pick in the import, and the file bytes stream through WhipScribe's server to its own transcriber; your Drive sign-in never reaches the browser or the transcription worker, and audio is never sent to a third-party AI service.
Will the transcripts name the interviewer and the participant?
Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. Every line of the transcript carries its timestamp, so you can check any attribution against the audio before you quote it.
Import the interview folder once.
