How it works

Tamil subtitles in three steps.

1

Upload the Tamil recording

Drop a file, or paste a public link from YouTube, Google Drive or a podcast feed. Files over 500 MB continue on the upload page, up to 10 hours or 5 GB.

2

Read it through

Read the first Tamil cues against the audio. Correct a line on the transcript and the subtitle file carries the correction.

3

Download SRT or VTT

SRT for YouTube Studio and video editors, VTT for web players. TXT, DOCX and JSON come from the same transcript.

What to expect with Tamil

Honest notes for Tamil recordings.

For a transcript rather than subtitles, see transcribe Tamil, Tamil audio to text and Tamil YouTube video to text. For subtitles from any YouTube link, YouTube to SRT; for any file, the SRT generator.

Captioning Tamil

Written Tamil and spoken Tamil are not the same text.

Tamil is diglossic: the formal written language and everyday spoken Tamil differ in word endings and vocabulary. News, lectures and devotional talks are close to the written form, and that is where the text is strongest. Fast colloquial speech, the kind in vlogs and film interviews, needs the most correction, and a captioner also has to decide whether the cue should read as spoken or as written Tamil.

The Tamil script marks a vowel-less consonant with a dot above it, the pulli (்), and the dot changes the word. Loanwords from Sanskrit and English use the Grantha letters ஜ, ஷ, ஸ and ஹ. A font that lacks them, or a tool that drops combining marks, produces a cue that looks complete and reads wrong.

Delivery

Where a Tamil subtitle file goes.

Before you rely on it

What the subtitle file is, and what it is not.

One cue per spoken phrase

Each cue is a phrase from the transcript with its start and end time. Most run a few seconds. A passage spoken without a pause can come out as one long cue of up to about half a minute, so split those in your editor if your platform wants two short lines at a time.

Timing comes from the audio

Cue times are taken from the recording itself, so the file lines up with the video or audio you uploaded. If you trim the start of the video afterwards, shift the cues by the same amount in your editor.

Fix a line before you download

Open the transcript, correct a misheard name or number on its line, and the SRT and VTT you download carry the correction with the timing unchanged.

A plain file, not a styled video

You get the subtitle file. Fonts, colours, position and captions drawn into the picture are done in your video editor or player, which reads this file.

Limits

Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per recording. The box on this page takes files up to 500 MB; larger ones continue on the upload page. 99+ languages, detected automatically.

Speakers

Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. The cues in the subtitle file carry the words and their timing only.

FAQ

Tamil subtitles, answered.

How do I make Tamil subtitles for a video?

Upload the video or paste its link in the box on this page. The Tamil speech is transcribed in Tamil script; read it through, correct any line, and download SRT or VTT from the transcript.

Will the Tamil subtitles be in spoken or written Tamil?

The text follows the speech, and formal speech transcribes best. Colloquial Chennai or film-style Tamil needs a closer review, including any choice you make about written forms.

Why is a dot missing on some Tamil letters in my editor?

The pulli (்) is a combining mark. If it disappears, a tool in your chain has dropped combining characters or the font lacks it; the downloaded file is UTF-8 and keeps it.

Does it work for Sri Lankan Tamil?

Sri Lankan and Indian Tamil are both transcribed. Names, place names and dialect words from either are the parts worth checking.

How accurate are Tamil subtitles?

We have not published a benchmark figure for Tamil, so we do not quote one. Judge it on your own recording: the free preview (first 20 minutes free) shows the text before you pay.

How long can a Tamil recording be?

Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Files over 500 MB continue on the upload page rather than in the box on this page.
