M4A is what an iPhone writes when you open Voice Memos, what QuickTime saves for an audio-only recording, and what a great many recorder apps produce. Upload one and get cues timed to the speech. Past 500 MB the upload page takes over, right up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Packs from $4 · see the preview before signing up · $8 covers 1,000 minutes, credits stay put.
How it works
The recording goes from the phone to a caption file without a conversion step.
In Voice Memos, share the recording to Files, to a cloud drive or to your Mac, then drop what lands into the box above.
Each word comes back carrying its own timestamp, usually a few minutes of waiting per hour of recording. No account needed to look.
SRT for editors, VTT for web players, and TXT, DOCX, JSON or Markdown from the same job.
M4A specifics
At the compressed setting Voice Memos uses by default, an hour of recording is a few dozen megabytes, so a phone memo almost never approaches the 5 GB ceiling; the 10-hour limit per file is the one that eventually applies. Switch the app to its lossless setting and files grow roughly tenfold, which matters for all-day sessions.
An M4A from a phone is sound alone, so the SRT is destined for something else: a short video built around the memo, a caption track beside a player, or timed text in an editor. The broader page is audio to SRT, video to SRT covers files with picture, YouTube to SRT takes a public link, and the caption generator accepts any source.
M4A and MP4 are close relatives — both are MPEG-4 containers, with .m4a used when there is no picture inside. If your file is .mp4 but plays as sound only, either page works; MP4 to SRT has the video-sized details. More about the container is on the M4A format page.
Where the file goes
Interviews and field notes recorded on a phone become short videos, with the words on screen in step with the voice.
VTT beside an embedded player makes a recorded note readable as well as listenable, without anyone transcribing it by hand.
Bring the SRT into Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve when phone audio is being cut alongside footage from a camera.
The same recording exports as DOCX, TXT or Markdown, and stays in your library.
Pricing
a pack from $4 opens the full transcript and complete at any length. After that: $8 buys 1,000 minutes, $12 buys 2,000, $24 buys 5,000, with no expiry.

FAQ
Share the memo out of Voice Memos to Files or a cloud drive, upload the M4A here, preview it without signing up, then download the SRT with a free account.
Yes. The upload box works in a phone browser, so the memo can go from Voice Memos to a caption file without ever touching a computer.
No. SRT, VTT, TXT and DOCX files hold only the words and their timings.
They share a container. The .m4a extension is used when the file holds sound only, while .mp4 usually carries picture as well. Both upload the same way.
The ceiling is 10 hours or 5 GB for any one file. At default Voice Memos quality you meet the time limit long before the size one.
A 30-minute recording uses $0.24 of the $8 pack. Your first transcript, at any length, costs nothing at all.
Every page in this set uses the same upload box and the same export. All subtitle pages
